cobra 29 classic.

Have not used one in a pickup in a while, but drove semi for years.

The cobra classic is great, and isn't very high these days.

You can find them in pawn shops, and second hand stores for $25.

I have been thinking about adding one to my pickup, but wonder if anyone uses them anymore.

I like that you don't have to drill any holes.

I am about 10 years behind on modern cb radios. But they haven't changed.

Every driver I met tried some weird model and then went back to a cobra 25 or 29.

They just worked better. My self included in that.

If you really want to find the best cb, look for a truckers forum, or drive to a giant truck stop and ask around.

I typical bought them from a small cb shop in the back of a pickup at a truck shop.

Guys would custom tune them and get you great set ups.

I have both a Cobra 29 LTD and Cobra 29 LX. The LX is a more modern version with more features while the LTD is a classic style that hasn't changed for years. I don't have either one in my current truck but had both at one time in my old truck. I've also tried numerous antenna configurations with 1 or 2 and with fiberglass and thin stainless steel whips. The best one was actually the 102" steel whip, but I used the cheap Radioshack one. It worked great but didn't last long. Also I found out that you really only need 1 antenna. I mounted the antennas to my toolbox in the bed and used 18 wheeler mirror mounts and just sandwiched the toolbox side between the 1 sides of the mount. You can get pretty much anything you need for a Cb and CB antenna and mounting everything at most truck stops.

I don't have one in my current truck because I really didn't use them that much, but if I get an old truck for hunting or play I'll put one in that one. The 2 good brands for CBs is Cobra and Uniden. They also make smaller ones and also handheld CBs which isn't a bad idea.I think you should rig up an antenna on the truck and run the coax cable to the handheld.

Hello,

I just installed a cb radio in my 2014 Silverado double cab with out the deep center console. I bought a radio shack magnetic antenna and have it mounted on the top of the cab. I then ran the wire through the cab by drilling a hole and sealing around it. I ran the wire under the front seat to the front. I mounted the cb to the door under the traction control and cargo light switch so it will still open. I love the setup so far. If you have a question let me know. Hope this helps.

Wow must not of been a good contact or a good magnet I have been on many highways with a constant speed above 70, and so far mine has not flown off.

It was a really wide base, maybe 6". It could have been that I had the wrong antenna on it. I had a fiberglass whip like most truckers have and didn't have any kind of spring on it. I knew nothing about that stuff back then, but I still prefer a more permanent antenna mount. Plus I don't want to put anything on the paint like that. Next time I'll probably mount the antenna on the side of the rear bumper or something.

Be careful of those magnetic mounts I've had them and they will rust in-between the truck metal and the magnet.

Yeah I agree with you, I like permanent mounts a lot also, I got the magnetic mount for Christmas, but I am thinking about putting a stake mount with a 4 ft firestik antenna.I drilled a hole into the cab so when I do make the setup permanent it will be easier. I drilled the hole because I heard its not good to have the wire run out of the door jam because in the winter I heard it will form and not seal properly and cause wind noises.

It was done on my 98 extended cab, I just ran the coax cables between the cab and bed and then below the cab and up through the extended door. I did it on the bottom so no water would get in and if there was any wind noise I didn't hear it. I never had an issue with it leaking since it was on the very back corner and I don't think any water (even when driving in a bad storm) got into the cab. For security about the cable from body movements I wrapped the cable around the step bracket before going into the cab. Nothing hung and it was enough slack in case the bed and cab moved independently while off-road. I also wrapped the section of the bracket with electrical tape to stop the cable from rubbing on any of the corners of the bracket. That's the best way I could figure out without having to drill any holes in the body. Only holes was for the antenna mounts on the sides of the toolbox. They were the 4 bolt mirror mounts for 18 wheelers so they were solid. After taking the CB and antennas out I used the brackets for tie-downs lol.

I thought this one would be nice because if it's ease of use. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000K2YR/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

I don't know?

They aren't bad, but can be hard to hear (small tinny speaker). You need an external (magnetic or otherwise) to get the most out of it.

I have one I used in rental cars, eventually dropped it for a fullsize Uniden PC78XL on a board.

I tried a magnet mount when I first got the 29 LTD CB and it kept coming unattached when going down the interstate so I will never get another magnet mount again.

I've ran a lot of magnet mounts, eventually drilled the hole and hardmounted a Wilson 5000.

Hardmounting makes for a nice clean install. No wires on the outside.

    • Curious, did anyone ever get a fix for the vibration reported here.   I have a 2024 Silverado with 6.6 duramax.   I’m noting the same vibration resonating up through the steering shaft into the steering wheel.    Best way to describe- like someone is tapping on the steering shaft/components and it’s resonating into the steering wheel.    thanks.
    • Hi friends - first time poster. I have a 2015 sierra Denali with 150k miles, I’m the second owner and she’s given me 75k of great service. I run a pulse AFM disable device. Starting Thursday when I exited the freeway after a short local ride it started idling rough, with an obvious misfire shake and was down on low end power.  I got it home and hooked it up to my scannner and found no codes but in live data a pretty bad misfire on cylinder 5. I replaced the coil, plug and wire with all new OE replacements (Delphi gn10165 coil, acdelco wire and 41-168 plug). It’s still behaving the same way after firing the parts cannon at it.   I know cyl 5 is a non AFM cylinder so I am not thinking this is AFM related but I’m kinda at a loss. injector? Bent pushrod? It’s running too well over 1k rpm to suggest those IMO. Has anyone chase this issue before and what was it? Any suggestions?
    • 2017 Silverado L83 5.3l 6speed transmission Hello, not a new member but havent posted in a while and my old signup info isnt working so had to create a new account. anyways, I have an issue with my truck and hope someone can spread some light on whats happening: -when it goes to 4cyl mode it makes a clunk sound (but not when coasting or going downhill) -when in 4 cyl mode and under load it makes a load pulsating sound (not a tick). -goes away completely when in M5 gear or when plugging in an AFM delete. Im guessing it is one of 2 things but im not convinced of either to be honest. 1. lifter stuck in v8 mode 2. torque converter shudder realistically it doesn't seem like the TC as there is no physical vibration , and it never happens in v8 mode. but maybe? and wouldnt a lifter make a sound whether with load or not? any ideas let me know please. thank you!
    • Which has made me wonder with the various engine failures of a few brands in the last few years, is it sub par materials such as lifters etc causing failures, or bearing clearances on the crank etc or perhaps bad designing of an engine physically or causing too much load on the components due to the hp/torque they can push out of them. Or is the oil viscosity and additive package of current oils or a lack of oil flow by an oil pump not able to supply sufficient oil at idle or under high load at low rpm. Or is it every item I listed that combined together has pushed the limits so far to the left that there is hardly a margin of safety left and add in some fuel dilution and too long of an OCI and premature engine failure is the result ?.
