Be careful of those magnetic mounts I've had them and they will rust in-between the truck metal and the magnet.

I've bubbled the paint under a magnet mount, never had a rust issue.

I don't want to drill holes so I was wondering about the portable one I had a link to with a magnetic antenna? I don't need a super range or anything, just some extra peace of mind and on those longer trips can kind of know what's going on on the road ahead of you

i've had a cb in every vehicle i've ever owned. first one i had was a cobra 19 small compact and worked great for a long time through various vehicles and antenna, for all i know it still works, i forgot to take it out of one of my cars when i traded it in. second one was a uniden 520 pro, another small one, worked well in my jeep, used it for trail rides mainly, now i have a uniden bearcat 880, wanted to try something new and had room in my pickup for a full size radio, its nice but confusing to go through the various menus so i ordered a cobra 29 NW WX BT, has all the bells and whistle with the old style look, hard to find also lol.

as for antennas most had just radio shack magnet mount ones, cheap and easy to replace if they fell off or broke. my old nova had a 102 on the rear bumper that worked great until i broke the tip off in a parking garage lol. jeep had a fire stik on the rear bumper and pickup now has a perma mount wilson 1000 on the roof that works the best of all the others i tried. truck used to have a company radio in it when it was a fleet truck so i just reused the hole that was there.

funny thing is i drive an 18 wheeler everyday and dont have a cb in it lol, well not a 40 channel. but mainly because im lucky if i drive the same truck more than 3 days in a row :/

Trying to figure out how to put the cb antenna on...may have to go with a "window mount" unit, although the reception would be a lot weaker. I currently have a roof magnet antenna on, but had to go in through the left rear passenger door and it looks crappy. I couldn't find a way to go through the rear of the cab, like I could with my Avalanche. I have a Cobra 75WX and it's a great little handheld unit. Thought about the hood mount, but wasn't sure about it.

The NMO mount is by far the best option for an antenna. Mag mount antennas are ok for something that is temporary but for the long haul they are a pain, Scratched paint, Rust, broken window because antenna came off when a gust of wind rips it off the roof.

What is an "NMO" mount? I don't have the skills to do any drilling into the vehicle.

This is an NMO mount. You do have the option to get a bracket to make this a fender mount rather than put it in the roof. The roof is by far the best place for an antenna. The nice thing about an NMO antenna is you can change the antenna any time you want if you decide you are tired of the CB. These mounts are sealed with o-rings and work very well. Your local 2 way radio shop will be able to hook you up with a nice antenna and install the mount for you. I installed my own but I have done several in the past. I hope I posted the pics properly. Google NMO fender mounts to see more pics if the roof mount isnt for you.

Ya my problem is I have 6" from my roof to the garage door opening. I can't do a standard roof mount, that's why I was probably going to go with a window mount in the rear, putting it 4-5" above the roof line.

As others have said, cobra and bearcat are popular with truck drivers, if you take it into a CB shop, they'll peak and tune it to help you get out better, but a good antennae is a must to hear and be heard - Wilson has great antennas.

About 15 years ago in my S-10, I used to run a tuned Galaxy 99v with a Wilson 5000 magnet mount hooked up to a 1500 watt linear amp which ran through through 2 extra batteries and a 200 amp alternator. When NoProblem spoke, on a good day, people within about a 40 mile radius, listened lol. Everyone used to think I was talking from a base station. It was really cool.

When I would flip on the linear and was close enough, I could come over peoples car speakers, and I'd yell right over top the muzak at fast food restaurants when driving through the parking lot. It was pretty funny sometimes.

Google this: 2014 gmc sierra fender mount nmo

You will see some pics and it is a non drill option and it will give you years of trouble free service. A radio shop will have this stuff on hand.

I like that last mount a lot and it definitely wouldn't get in the way. I've thought about getting one but really didn't know how many people still use them and therefore who I would talk to. :P

Thanks for the link! Hmmm...maybe I should get one of these...

    • I only have a few of the ACDelco blue remaining. One or two of the (old, old) ACDelco Professional boxes, and a couple of the newer style GM boxes with the simulcast in Chinese along with English. FWIW they've all been pretty good, regardless of where they are made, and in 20 years I've never had a problem with an e-core filter.   Now I have a couple of the "A" series in my home inventory. They come in a plain white box with the GM hologram sticker and model information. Have not installed one yet, want to use up my oldest inventory first.

    • I've been eyeing an upgrade to my tonneau cover for a bit now.  Intrigued by the BAK MX4 EZ-Lift with the torsion spring and went for the upgrade.  Thoughts and musings during unpacking, install and a few days of usage.   Once my order went into Realtruck, it took about 4 days to ship.  Unfortunately, FedEx Ground destroyed the box and contents and it was unusable upon receipt.  To Realtruck's credit, one email with pictures and an RMA was sent to me to send the first one back, and another unit was shipped out.  It arrived 3 days later, unscathed.   I opened the box and it looked like every other BAK MX4.   Biggest differences are the rails and retaining clamps, and of course the spring attached to the cover itself.     NOTE - if you are upgrading from a MX4 to the EZ-Lift, you will have to replace the rails.  The EZ-Lift rails have a notch cut in them to allow the new style retaining clamps to fit properly.  The new retaining clamps also have 2 knobs/carriage bolts and there are two tracks underneath the front panel. The strap clips are mildly different (more like the Undercover Flex clamps) in that the screws go in from the underside.  Personally I prefer these over the BAK clamps that use the nutserts that are a nuisance to install.  The remainder of the parts in the box (drain tubes, rail clamps, and bumper pads) are standard issue BAK.     I did not replace my front bed seal at the time because it seemed to be in decent shape.   BAK recommends shims on the GM trucks unless you place the clamps on the flanges about 1/3 of the way in from both the front and rear of the bed.  I shimmed the front and the middle, and initially placed the clamps equidistant.  This also turned out to be a mistake, because when I set the cover in place, the new style retaining clamps wouldn't clear the front clamp.   New style clamp inserted in the track:     And the issue which occurred because the front rail clamp was too far forward:     Once I removed the shim from the front of the bed, and slid the clamp back to the front flange, everything cleared fine.     The cover set on the rails without issue and I installed the strap clamps.  After I completed my adjustments, I pulled the pin to activate the torsion spring.  Mistake #3 on my part.  PULL THE PIN AS THE VERY VERY VERY LAST STEP!  The reason is, once you pull the pin, the torsion spring is activated.  If you have to loosen the front clamps and adjust the cover, the front panel will - by virtue of the spring, refuse to lay down.  The only way to get it to lay down so you can reinstall and tighten the clamps is to fully open the panel against the back of the cab, which will then allow the front panel of the cover to lay down and be tightened.  Not a big deal unless you haven't installed the foam pads yet (typically the last step) because minus the foam pads, you will need to place something between the frame of the cover and the back window so it doesn't get scratched.  The next time I install one I will install the foam pads before I pull the pin and activate the spring.   After using it for a few days:   The spring assist is great.  You literally can open it with one hand.  My shoulders aren't getting any younger and this was part of my motivation to swap out. The second panel latches and unlatches itself as you open and close the cover.  Neat in concept, however it took me a minute to get used to closing the cover and not hearing the "latching" sound that would tell me it was locked in place. The paddle handles are a huge upgrade and I wouldn't be surprised to see them become the standard across the Realtruck line.  They effectively eliminate the concern that a thief could coat hanger the cover open and get to the contents in the bed. I'm not sure why the very front panel on my cover has a different finish from the other 3 panels.  I have a request into Realtruck to find out if mine was not manufactured properly or if it was by design.   All in all I'm pleased.  Same level of protection, looks good, keeps stuff mostly dry (they all leak around the tailgate) and easy to install.
