CB Radio?

Hardly anybody on there anymore. I just took one out of the truck I traded. I'm undecided if I will re-install it and if I do, where I will mount an antenna. My bed has the sprayed in liner and the plastic rail covers. Not too conducive to a good rf ground. Probably will use a mag-mount, but they can scratch your paint even if you are careful, and if you leave them on all the time they will rust underneath the magnet. Of course if life as we know falls to pieces they be the only way to communicate.......unless the zombies get them too!

One of the best technicians I've used is DTB out of Carlisle, PA. He does good work, no hack work, radios are clean and no splatter. I ran a Uniden PC76XL, that he set up, in front of a Fatboy class C, 5-pill box, and had zero splatter...garbage in is garbage out. I was dead keying just shy of 150 watts and swinging nearly 800...and again, no splatter. He has been in every one of my radios, but it's been probably three years since I've been in his shop.

 

Since then, I'm running barefoot...pretty much got out of the illegal stuff since I don't travel as much (traveled cross country for work and commuted 100 miles daily when I was home, I work from home now and rarely travel for work.)

lYou are right about DTB. He has been around forever and does good work.

Although I am retired, I still drive a truck occasionally. I travel in AR,MO, MS, TN, TX, OK, LA. Just got back from a motocycle trip to CO and NM. And I'll still say there aren't many people on the CB anymore where I travel. And I always have mine on!

I chatted with a batch of drivers over the weekend, while there aren't many non-truck drivers out there; there are still plenty on the air.

 

When most of the trucks got governed at 68mph, and the price of fuel went to $5/gallon, a lot of guys quit talking because they aren't speeding! Fuel was $3/gal as I drove to Washington state, spiked on me in South Dakota, and the radio traffic died soon after.

 

Not to mention the airwaves have been really noisy as of late because of the solar maximum, so cb is pretty limited right now...another year or so and the static hiss will be pretty much gone.

This is something ive been wanting to install but just dont feel that there are enough people still using CBs to get use out of it.

Cell phones and XM radio also contributed to the drop in CB use. As more and more trucking companies ban cell phone use while driving, CBs may make a come back. It is very hard to get good performance in the new trucks though. Most won't go the lengths it takes to have a good performing radio.
