Anyone familiar with the ignition recall on Pontiac Grand Prix's?

My mom got a recall on her 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix for the ignition switch. What I'm wondering is what exactly they do and how long it should take.

Reason I'm asking is because she called one dealership in town said it would be 2 hours and the other one in town said it would be at least 3 hours and they have to order the part.

I'd like to have an idea of what is actually done before she goes in so that if it takes longer than they say I will have something to say to them. I don't even totally trust the one that says 2 hours because the last time I was there they took 2 freakin' hours to change my oil.

TIA

Isn't just an insert that they put into the hole on the key? So instead of the long, rectangular hole it will just be a small hole big enough for the key ring.

What he said. Big hole in the key becomes small hole. Having done them before, the procedure, if the original keys can just recieve the inserts takes 30 minutes. If they have to modify the original key, plan on an hour.

It's just modifying the keys. Only the Cobalts, HHR's, G5's and whatever Saturns get the ignition switch, cylinder and keys.

Pretty sure they're replacing switches too. Not just keys.

Just modifying keys on Grand Prix, Impala, Lacrosse, Lucerne, Alero, Grand Am, Malibu (1997-2005), DTS, Deville and Monte Carlo. Years ranging from 1997-2013 (2014 for select Impala, the old body style carryover ones). No switches. Thats Cobalt, G5, HHR, Ion, Sky and Solstice.

My bad.

Semi-related, back when it was like 9-10 suspected deaths six were due to drinks and one was a medical issue. I wonder if that ratio of outside factors to legit innocent deaths has remained the same.

They're just putting on an insert where the ring goes thru the key?? How is that supposed to take 2 hours? Geezzz

How else do you think the dealership's keep their lights on?!? :rollin:

Well if they take two hours to change oil, then something as complicated as popping an insert into a big hole to make it a small one has got to be more complicated...right? lol

You are very right! lol

Maybe they didn't play that game much as a kid where they had to fit the wooden blocks into the proper holes. :P

Forgot to come back and update everyone on this. So I went to the dealership who promised to do it in the least amount of time and I took the car in for her. Told them I heard that this recall shouldn't take more than an hour and they said it shouldn't. Long story short by the time I gave them the keys to when I was getting them back was exactly 45 mins.

Much more reasonable than the 3 hours and we don't have the part story that the one dealership was trying to tell me. :P

Thanks again for everyone's input. Much appreciated.
