MAP update introduces problems in 2014 Silverado LTZ...

I have a 2014 Silverado LTZ with NAV where I recently recently updated the maps. It’s a DIY project where you purchase the update from GM - can be done on the web, and you’re sent a USB stick and simple instructions on how to implement the update. Everything went as it should per instructions but after, two “bugs” seemed to have been introduced.

The first and most annoying is that after having entered a destination into the NAV system and and are proceeding to follow the route, everything is OK until such time that the vehicle is shut down ie: refueling, break etc. When the vehicle is restarted, the NAV often times, but not always, displays a screen indicating “No Route Possible. A route could not be calculated to the selected destination. Please select a new destination and try again.” In other words. the route is lost. If you go into the menu and select “Resume Destination”, nothing happens, no matter how many times you punch the button. It’s a pet rock. The only other option is to select from “Recent destinations” or re-enter the destination from go. This did not happen prior to the map update. The route should remain intact until such time as it is completed or manually cancelled by the user.

The second issue is a minor annoyance in that the NAV system, randomly it seems, announces “Caution - Road with restricted access.” This generally happens when your are starting to travel somewhere and do or do not have to have a destination programmed into the system.

I called the support line for “HERE” maps - the supplier of the map data and also called the GM Infotainment support line and nobody seems to know anything or take ownership of the issue. I have a difficult time finding that acceptable.

If there are any GM representatives on this site that are reading this, here’s a note that I hope you take to your leaders. I have been around computers and systems just about all my adult life - I’m 62, so that’s been awhile now, and I’ve seen a lot of good, and a lot of bad... I have seen it and experienced it. The MyLink system represents one of the worst user experiences I have encountered in modern times. It’s slow, clunky, unintuitive, buggy and to me is designed below minimum requirements required to robustly perform the tasks it’s supposed to perform. I am also a customer that has paid a premium to have the features this system is supposed to offer. As a customer, this is not acceptable, and it’s not acceptable that we are expected to live with the issues eternally for the duration of ownership without any hope of any type of resolution. The auto manufacturers need to focus their attention where they shine the most, and that’s designing and producing outstanding vehicles. But, please, form some type of alliance with someone who knows the art (key word) of designing systems like Apple, Google or Microsoft for your future infotainment systems. They are successful at this and do it better than anybody - look no further than their stock prices as evidence. They don’t make billions with failures.

I haven't had the other issue, but I have experienced "Caution - Road with restricted access" message. I heard this message right after the update and presents every time I approach a specific divided road while exiting a shopping center where I can only exit to the right with no left turn access. Other times it seems random, but didn't notice the repeat until I went through the same exit twice. Annoying is a mild word for this!

I agree with your comments regarding the MyLink system. I've been in the computer support arena for many years and am an avid gadget lover including many Apple products, along with Microsoft, Google and other Apps. This is one of the worst examples of user experience I haveever seen. Marketing at its best with promises of break through tech that doesn't deliver.

I've had to have the radio replaced because it would not pick up FM stations. The worst radio experience I've ever had. It's working now, but think about it...2014 LTZ that wouldn't even pick up FM stations? And the radio won't even turn off - I can turn it off to the clock screen, but when restarting the truck, the radio is back on "muted". I've never seen this before in ANY of the other GM vehicles. So what's up with that?

I've been trying to figure out the logic in the radio thing myself. If you press and hold the power button, everything is "turned off" and the clock is displayed. If you adjust the volume with the knob or steering column buttons, nothing happens. But if you tap the mute button, the radio comes on. I guess, depending on how you look at it, this could be considered a feature as it could minimize distraction while driving in that you really don't have to take your hands off the wheel or fumble with the radio console.

The whole design of the MyLink and similar systems is to allow functionality while minimizing distraction. Keep your eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. Unfortunately they don't really do a very good job. Take the voice recognition system in MyLink, for instance. This is akin to getting into an argument with a deaf person at 70 miles per hour. As you argue with your car trying to get it to understand what you want, hair all tasseled, eyes crossed, face beet red, BP up 50 points and in a cold sweat...it's hard to imagine how this thing succeeds at minimizing any kind of distraction. If I need to do anything beyond dead simple, I just pull off the road. With all of the government mandates regarding safety, I can't figure out how this type of system really passed muster. And then there's the $200 phone...works every time, voice recognition 99.9% accurate, great map system and does everything - as long as you have a network connection.

Where did you get the update from? Did you try contacting them?

You get the map update from GM...can be purchased from their web site. The actual map data comes from "HERE" - that's the name of the company. You can Google "HERE MAPS" for more information. GM sent a letter advising of the update. I did it this time but will probably not do it but every 3 or 4 years again if I still have the truck. To answer your question, yes, I did contact both HERE and GM's infotainment helpline. Got nowhere in either case. I will run it by the dealer at my next scheduled service and see if they have any ideas.

OMG do i ever agree with you regarding the most inoperable voice recognition system i have ever tried using. I tried for honestly 15 minutes to get it to understand my request for a route I was beyond irate then my wife told me it must be my voice, well she tried until she was so mad she told me she was going to smash the nav screen lol. What a waste of $1000 on piece of shit option oh and to top it off when driving on the road i live on it shows we are driving through a field, no road there at all, the road has been there before my great grandfather built his farmhouse on it in 1919. Guess "HERE" needs to update there maps lmao

EMMM? Well I've had my 2014 LTZ Silverado since new. Yes the "infotainment" equipment is a bit clunky to be kind. I received the notice about the 2018 nav upgrade with a sale price of $139 good until 12/31/17. I actually was at my computer on line getting ready to spend the money, but I didn't. After thinking about it, I came up with the conclusion that this 139 bucks could actually provide me with a larger amount of "clunkyness." Based on what I've read here, I made the correct decision! My nav seems to work pretty good as well as the phone pairing. However compared to the nav on the phone hanging on my belt, GM's attempt is not to sporty. They should just sub it all out to Google or Apple or someone and give up. LOVE the truck though.
