Reverse Camera **UPDATE**

I have the same setup as you. Sounds like a reprogrammed HMI or a completely separate setup like a camera in the mirror are our two options.

I found this one awhile back.

Does anyone have a link to a website that sells the reprogrammed HMI?

Was at the dealership today. They are unable to reprogram my truck (HMI unit) GM says its not possible in my truck. Dealership was very willing to look into it but its just not something they or maybe GM will allow them to do. Its obviously technically possible since other have got it done by third parties. But I don't really know how I feel about having a third party reprogrammed HMI in my truck especially being so new and under warranty so I may hold off awhile or get the rearview mirror one that wouldn't require any special third party programming. Kind of a bummer GM is making it so difficult for owners to do upgrades to thier trucks.

That's unfortunate. Thanks for keeping us updated. I was planning on giving it a go when I went in to do my first oil change at the dealer to see what they say. I may still inquire about it but it seems silly to me that it would be such an issue. I wonder what they would say if you had the OEM camera installed and plugged in and went in and said "hey for some reason my reverse camera won't work can you figure out why?" what would end up happening. Anyway we shall see. I'm sure someone will figure out what needs to be done.

I have an aftermarket camera setup my camera video cable is broke I was wondering if I could replace the aftermarket camera with a factory one and just plug it in since my hmi is already programmed

Did you order a reprogrammed HMI or did you have your dealer reprogram it? And if so, how did you go about getting them to reprogram it?

I'm so glad I found the original post and did the hmi reprogram.. it's made my life so easy especially when I hook up my 16 ft enclosed trailer 2 of 3 times weekly, day or night I'm able to get hooked up to the trailer in seconds! So thank you to the original poster...:)

I remember seeing in another post (or possibly on a site that offered unlocking like MVI) that the backup camera was controlled by more than just the HMI (maybe BCM) and would take more than a toggle switch to activate it while the shifter was not in reverse.

Maybe something that could help some people is a write up or something that details exactly what to tell the dealership when it comes to the reprogramming. I know MVI says on their site that "Dealer programming is required (approximately 1 hour and instructions will be provided to the dealer)" so maybe if we could make an easy list of instructions for the less than competent service centers could do what they obviously have the means to do, it would make your lives easier.

So I found the junction box with a filler plug marked "rc". How do I determine if it is already wired and is there anyway to tell if I'll need it programmed before I install it?

Just an update on how things went for me. I spent some time shopping around for the camera and the handle to get a decent price as I wasn't in a tremendous hurry to get this done. I ended up getting the tailgate handle on ebay and the camera from GM parts center. I installed both in what was probably 10 to 15 minutes. Very quick and easy. Plugged it into the plug on the bottom rear of the truck where the camera is supposed to plug in and that part was finished. It obviously didn't work since the HMI wasn't reprogrammed. Contacted autospa/MVI and got a programmed HMI shipped out to me. I received it yesterday and swapped it out. Basically had to remove the lower glove box, unplug the cords that were currently plugged into my original HMI, removed the HMI, replaced it with the reprogrammed one and plugged everything back in. Also probably another 10 - 15 minutes to do this. Now I throw the truck in reverse and everything works perfectly. Movable grid lines and everything. I have the 4.2" screen. It was a very simple process, ended up being cheaper than most reverse camera systems out there and it works seamlessly as if it came from GM like this.

What was your total cost?

Thanks for the update and again to shermnater for his posts as well. So glad to hear this works. I too want to do this eventually. I bought a tailgate handle on eBay already.

Hey guys I'm newbie to site. Have 14 Lt crew with 4.2" io4 and no camera. In same boat as y'all and have ordered tg handle and camera from eBay for approx 139.00. Will also be doing 8" upgrade thru online company fixmygauges.com. I'm getting it for around 650. A lot of money to spend but I just hate that cheap looking small screen and no camera. Hope it works out as good as yours did. Are you sure no other wiring is needed?? Almost seems too easy for camera part. Anyway thanks for all the great ideas and solutions y'all have posted on this site. Makes it that much easier to spend even more money on an already expensive truck lol.
