Reverse Camera **UPDATE**

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I was wondering if the plug and play and HMI reprogram for the backup camera will work on the 2015 Sierra WT. It DOES have the pins and the dummy plug where the camera should plug in. I just don't want to invest if the wiring is not. I also plan on doing a io3 to io5/io6 upgrade int he near future from MVI Mobile(I think thats what its called). Any thoughts. Thanks in advance.

I've been told by Carl at Digital Dash Solutions that the 2015 Sierra WT (base model) does NOT have the needed connection wiring inside the dash?.. I have not yet confirmed this, but I will be looking into it since I have a WT that I want to add the backup camera too as well. Previously, I had spoken to someone at the local GMC dealer about flashing my stock HMI for a backup camera and they quoted me around $150 to do it, but did not mention any wiring issues. A wiring diagram should make this easier to determine if anyone knows where to find a WT specific diagram. Looking under my truck, I found the CA connection port with the filler plug inside, and it also had the pins inside the port after removing the plug. Maybe someone else knows more about the WT model?

It will be really helpful if anyone can figure this out as I am looking at adding one to my base Sierra too.

After not getting any response on here or by email from MVI and being kinda nervous about having to reprogram the truck I went the backup cam in the rearview mirror route. Which I am very happy with.

How did you get the guidelines to turn on? I can't figure that out for the life of me! Any help would be awesome!

Anthony from MVI sent me this link to determine if my 2015 Silverado WT is prewired for a back up camera. It will be the same for your Sierra.

My GM dealer told me that GM does not support the adding of a back up camera based on my VIN. I believe that will be the same for your Sierra WT. Anthony at MVI can program your HMI module. You can either send him your HMI and be without your truck (truck will not turn on without the HMI) or for an extra charge he will sent you a swap out one. Good Luck! I have not done this as of yet because I am out of the country for several months. Please post what you end up doing. Thanks

2014 rear camera standard on sle/slt and not available on wt

2015 rear camera standard on sle/slt and optional on wt (as part of PDD sierra convenience package)

2016 rear camera standard on sle/slt and optional on wt (as part of PDD sierra convenience pkg or requires SXL elevation edition)

This suggest perhaps wiring is present in 15 but not in 14.

What kit did you purchase? The kit that I bought it just works when I put it in reverse. I just installed it per the instructions which included having to tap into 2 wires under the dash which I'm guessing is maybe what tells it when it's in reverse so the camera comes on and shows the guide lines. I can dig up post the instructions I used if you think that might help you?

I purchased the truck with it already installed but from the back of the mirror it is a Gentex and from the website seems to be the '50-GENK356A'. I don't know if your instructions would work but it's worth a shot. If it's a hassle to dig out don't worry about it. I've looked everywhere online and can't find anything that says that it should or should not have guidelines.

Thanks for your suggested help though.

Do you have the onstar controls in your mirror? I do recall when I was researching them that I think the kits with onstar had the guidelines and the one without did not have the guidelines.

The $499 version does not call out guidelines but the $599 version does. Pictures show without and with too.

So I ordered and installed the 8" screen and HMI from MVI which is working well.. I also installed a GM backup camera after verifying the wiring on my 2015 Sierra WT. Everything looked good with the wiring, but the camera does NOT appear on the screen when in reverse, and it gives a message to service vision system. I'm hoping that there may be a missing or blown fuse, or possibly just a bad camera, but I haven't had time to troubleshoot anything yet.

You may have already done this but double check that you have the camera plugged into the right connection under the truck. When my dealer updated the HMI software on my truck, they plugged the camera into the wrong connection port on the junction box behind the rear bumper and then complained that I brought them a broken camera or non-GM part to use. By default, there is a cap/plug already in the connection port that the camera plugs into (labeled RV or RC, if I remember correctly) and the spot next to that one is just a holder for the cap/plug to go when the camera is plugged in. You can see the wiring connections in the center port and the holder port just has a black plastic back on inside.

For fuses, according to the wiring diagram, it looks like the rearview camera is controlled by fuse 33 [back-up Lamps] in the Engine Compartment Fuse Block and also by fuse 31 [Accessory/Run Crank] in the Instrument Panel Fuse Block (left side).

Funny you should mention to check the plug because I actually did have it connected to the wrong one before. Unfortunately, even after I swapped it to the correct port the camera still doesn't show on the screen. I also checked the fuses and they are fine. Guess I'll be checking the wiring with a meter next.

This is why I am hesitant on doing this mod. I know that the wiring is in the back of the truck(via the MVI video), but I don't want to get BCM flashed and buy the camera just to find out that it does not work. Please keep us updated, Im very interested in this mod an hope everything works out for you.
