console key help

I just realized  that I didn't get a key to the floor console between the front seats of my 01 Silverado I bought used a few days ago?  Does anyone have a suggestion, short of replacing the whole lock cylinder, of how to get a key?  Thanks for any help.

(Thank goodness it isn't locked)

Did you buy it from a dealer?  If so, go back to them and let them know that you need a key for the console.  They may have to order a new console lid though.  Seems like I read that somewhere.

Good luck.

Last time I needed a key. All the dealer needed was a VIN number, and proof that I owned the truck.

They cut me one on the spot.

This was for the ignition, it may work for the console as well. Call your local stealership, they will be able to tell you.

Any dealer should be able to do it. I did it in Colorado for a truck that I bought in California.

This is also a useful tip for those of you (like me) who seem to manage to lock your keys in the truck more often than we care to admit. New key cost me about 5 bucks. Locksmiths and new windows cost a he!! of a lot more. If you have the time, just go to the dealer with insurance proof, which should have your VIN on it.

Hope this helps.

I tried my local dealer. They are about a clueless as is humanly possible.  I think their answer was something like a hasp and padlock.      If I get a chance this weekend I'm going to go to another nearby dealer and see what they say.  I know on my 99 it was a gold key single side cut with the word console on the key itself.  The ignition key doesn't work.  Didn't buy the truck at a Chevy dealership.  Again thanks

My console has a small yellow metal key for it, and my underseat storage compartment has the same style/type for it as well.  Possibly the dealer?

I would like to get a key for mine too.  The parts guy said the whole lid has to be ordered to get a key as Tom mentioned above.  I wonder if a good locksmith could cut a key for it??  Before reading this topic, I had assumed the ignition key fit, but was wrong in the assumption

vroten, I am taking my console liner/lid in next week to a lock smith in town.  I talked to them today and said they can make a key to fit the lock for around 8 dollars.   I bet it is a lot cheaper  than a new console lid!!

Make sure its not taped to the inside lid of the console. Or possibly taped inside the glovebox door.

Just a thought......

never know.

Sorry to revive such an old post, but I found the answer to my own question and thought someone might be in the same situation as I was. After contacting 2-3 local dealers I was told the only way to replace the key was to replace the entire top of the console as the lock cylinder was not replaceable and there was nowhere to get a key.

BUT after seeing a post about a site listing TSB's (It wasn't Alldata and I cannot remember the site) I found a TSB from Oct 01

from Alldata: 01-08-49-017 OCT 01 Center Front Floor Console Lock & Key - Availability

Took it to my dealer and they were able to order replacement keys from Hurd Corporation who is the supplier.

I guess this isn't the biggest issue in the world but it sure is nice to be able to lock the center console since my glovebox doesn't have a lock. Of course I know locks are for honest people and if someone were intent on looking inside the console it would be no problem to break the lock, but I hate missing detail. Problem solved!

Here's the site I found the TSB on:

Mentioned a few days ago by Silverado Man. Thanks a lot for sharing this site.

The members of this group are awesome...there's so much information here. It's nice when you go to a dealer and you know more about his product than he does.
