My engine compartment doesnt have a light...

I was putting on my bugshield the other evening and it got pretty dark up under the hood. I drive a 2011 Silverado btw. Every single truck Ive ever had prior to this had some sort of light under the hood. This one doesn't. Do yall think this is a factory oopsie or is this common now for GM? I had a 03 GMC 3/4 ton and had a light that would extend completely around the outside of the truck.

Not sure the last year they had a light under the hood. My 08 didn't have one either.

Nope, it doesn't. Many people just buy them on ebay and install them. The late 90's version has a retractable light. Some bean counter thought it would be a good cost savings idea I'm sure.

That's one thing I missed having on my previous truck. I was actually surprise to see one on the current truck. Not sure if it's factory or aftermarket, it's not extendable, but it works and is handy.

My '95 had a retractable reel light that was really hand and then I had an '03 with no light. Thought the same thing... WTF? Bought one of the units my '95 had but never got around to installing it so now I can put it on my '14.

It looks like quite a few people have come up with good solutions for hood mounted options, even with mercury switches to turn them on automatically.

My old truck had one, not this 2014 though. I really don't miss it. I try to do my checks in the daylight or with garage light. After that the flashlight works.

GM hasn't produced a vehicle equipped with underhood lighting for decades; neither have other manufacturers for about the same amount of time.

I just put an 1156 LED in my 96. that was a pleasant surprise. I could not see down into the holes to adjust headlamp.

there is also a underhood lamp,on the hood, bulb blown. won't even replace it.

nice addon, find one of those retractables, modernize with LED.
