Is this premature rust?

Build date of August 2014. I had the truck for 2 1/2 months.

 

Is this normal...?

Are you talking about the exhaust manifolds? If so, those always look like that (unless you get Stainless Headers).

These sure are nice to look at when you open the hood, still shiny after 100K miles since install.

normal. cast iron attracts moisture as it cools and its only surface rust.

No, that's definitely mature rust.

 

Since the exhaust manifolds are bare cast iron, they'll rust before you ever see the truck. Nearly every vehicle on the road looks like that. If a guy was totally anal and set on no rust on the exhaust manifolds, you could remove them, powder blast and have them flame (plasma) sprayed or plated with a protective material. But It's just not worth it. Some guys want headers anyway. I'm over that. (leaks, more difficult maintenance, more heat in the compartment, etc, etc..)
