Right, GM will still honor your non-LTE onstar for 5 years, probably longer. As long as the cell carriers have the ability. They aren't going to pay to upgrade any customers.

Canadians are already shutting down 2G, all will be shut down by july 1.

 

2014 trucks still use 2G, they do not have anything higher than that.

Ahh. If carriers are dropping the service, you might get an upgrade. I'd be surprised if they upgraded the non-paying customers though. I'm sure there's wording someplace that says services are subject to change. Good luck with that.

They are expected to cover all customer with any sort of "active subscription" they called it for an upgrade solution. Wether if it is free for older body styles that did not have subscription too, I am not sure.

And I think this is only for canadians first, i am not sure if american are turning off their 2g towers yet

I kind of surprised that GM went with 2G on these vehicles. I thought they were 3G at this point. 2G = EDGE, right?

As far as I know, the Canadian GM made ones are all 2G prior to 2015 (some select 2014 ones has LTE I think)

 

They never got 3G, maybe Americans did, but I doubt it is active because the remotelink for any of them are also slow as f*** so that is why I want the LTE upgrade bad.

 

2G is combination of a few, CDMA and some areas are edge, but usually edge will be indicated differently than 2G on a normal cell phone.

 

Oh, and Canadians didnt get 3G later than rest of the world, to be precise, they really only got HSPA, which was advertised as 4G. LTE later came out and advertised as "faster than 4G"

 

Lastly, the upgrade WILL have 3G as well, LTE service here in canada is terrible. This is the reason that I have asked OnStar what happens when I am in rural area without LTE? They specified that it will fall back to "3G". This makes sense as Canada does not have VoLTE service, OnStar will not be able to call through LTE antenna directly in Canada unless they use 3G.

The antennas are not interchangeable. My antenna was bad and my dealer was having a hard time getting a replacement and ordered a 2015 antenna and even sent out to have painted to match which I thought was a bonus but when they went to change it out it will not work. They had to order a 2014 and I waited a month for it.

So, are customers in Canada really getting OnStar equipment upgrades for free?

 

According to OnStar adviser, they should be free, some *may* have to commit to a subscription period to get it for free. Called the dealership, some people are already getting them done the past few weeks. I am still waiting on my notice as that is the "only way" I will be allowed to get mine done too.

 

If the antenna is removed what holes are left behind? I'd love to just get rid of mine.

 

add another 2 holes, one in the middle, last one to the passenger side at the same location. Add amber lights and it will look bad ass

Just got my letter in the mail to come in for free hardware upgrade and 3 months or 3gb of complimentary data

      The guy that owns K&P filters last I checked in with him has over 300,000 miles on his Dodge base Hemi using his own 35 micron absolute stainless mesh filter from its first oil change.    The GM study I've posted a dozen times shows the relationship in engine life based in multiples of base units, not miles or years. That is the base unit is the number of miles the motor ran using the reference filter efficiency.    The above two paragraphs dismantle anecdotal arguments IF one changes oil often enough to prevent particle formation and the motor is in otherwise good shape. That is not full of silica (no air filter) or suffering a metallurgical issue that is not part of the lubrication discussion. Poor heat treat in example.   Data from UOA's I've reviewed from more than a few engines can show remarkably broad variations in oil cleanliness using the exact same filter over the course of an engines life.     Lastly there is the common sense of it. Wear debris WILL circulate the engine BEFORE it ever sees a filter in route to that filter and WILL harm the pump which NEVER sees filtered oil.    Alpha question then becomes, given the facts, how long do you believe is a reasonable service life from a vehicle you are certain you will not pass down? That is the junk yard will be it's resting place when you're done with it? (the moral issue most don't care about).    Omega question is then how diligent are you prepared to be in general mechanical, air & oil maintenance? Preventing particulates and keeping them sufficiently dilute; preventing the precursors from generation, amalgamation and precipitation.    If I get a good look at the engine bay of a vehicle I have a fair idea of the owners commitment to the inside of the power train. That 30 micron WIX is still more efficient than a sieve.

      It also depends on what criteria someone is using for “best” when talking filters.  Are we going off best efficiency?   Best quality/QC?  Etc. because the two may not mutually exclusive.

      I'd guess that it's because they are Mann-Hummel filters since about 2016, they own Wix and are mostly all made in China now.
