Engine Oil Leak from Oil Filter

AC Delco only sells the cheap filters with the 'e' at the end. Any regular PF63's you might find are "new old stock". It's not a scheme having to do with ripping people off on free oil changes, the e-core design is used in many cheap oil filters sold as many other brands. They're all made by Champion Labs.

My 2016 Silverado 1500 with 5.3L engine was assembled at Ft. Wayne on Feb. 2, 2016. I changed oil and filter at 500 miles, and the OEM filter was PF63, NOT PF63e. I have a box of Wix filters I bought to avoid putting PF63e filters on my truck when i change oil in the future. Will probably go in for the free 8 quarts, then change the filter when i get home.

Sounds like GM has a secret supply of the PF63. AC Delco/GM have put out quite a few brochures promoting the PF63E's as a better filter than the old design.

I believe all new vehicles will come with the pf63 because GM said the engine manufacturing process was not able to use a pf63e due to an interference problem during assembly.

Just a brief recap on my experience with a leaking oil filter following the first oil change on my 2015 Chevy truck. The dealership made three attempts and used two different AC Delco filters but the leak would return. On March 23rd I picked up a Wix filter and the dealership installed it... they didn't have an issue with installing a Wix filter. It's been too soon to know if the Wix filter will correct the problem. I did find this link and it says there was a problem the oil filter adapter not being tightened to the correct torque value on engines built at the St. Catherine plant in a particular date range, and is the root cause of the leaks. http://gm.oemdtc.com...c-chevrolet-gmc I sent this link to the dealership and they replied back on March 25, that they had found the same information inside the GM system.

 

Lots of discussion on this forum about defective Delco flters and my dealership seem to think the same thing, but this may not be the case at all, rather it may due to the out of spec torque value of the oil filter adapter. If this be the case then it's unclear why a lose adapter would cause the seal on the oil filter to leak unless the internal housing of the oil filter is shouldering out against the adapter before the the oil filter seal is properly compressed. I have not put my eyes on this adapter but from what I can find it's similar to a pipe fitting but with a hex shoulder for tightening. The Wix filters may be correcting the problem because perhaps they are more concave than the Delco filters and therefore do not shoulder out against the adapter. This is all speculation on my part.

 

So the plan is to have this adapter checked at the next oil change or sooner if the leak returns before that time.

Have had our Silverado in for oil leak 9 times 7 times now they have said it was the oil filter.

To find out where your engine came from, look on the lower portion of the window sticker, gives country of origin for vehicle, engine and trans.
