Engine Oil Leak from Oil Filter

I just picked up a new '15 GMC, crawled underneath it out of curiosity a week ago and noticed a drop of oil on the bottom of the filter, filter seemed tight, got it to move maybe a 1/16th of an inch, will need to check it again & see if it's dry.

 

Only found 2 grease fittings (tie rod ends), surprised but I suppose they save money up front and make more on repairs?

My current car, now 9+ years old, was my first with no grease fittings (not even the two you have). "It's all sealed," I was told.

 

I was sceptical too, but after all these years I have not had any related problems.

My wife's G6 is like this. I was dumbfounded at first, but at 200,000 miles, I still have all the original pieces on there......

A little off topic...I fill my new filter full of oil before installing, any of you guys do this?

I don't. You save your engine like 2 seconds of no oil pressure. Not a big deal in my opinion.

I do, easy enough to do. How many change their vehicle's oil vs. having a shop do it?

Picked it up this afternoon. Service said it was the filter. I'm doubting that because this would mean I had two bad filters... I'll keep an eye on it.

 

I have always changed my own oil. But the Silverado takes 8.5qts and since you get free oil changes, why not let them do it.

I always fill the filter when the filter location allows.

TSB came out and GM is now stating the oil capacity is 8qts.

The Engine Oil Capacity – with Oil Filter for all GEN V, V8 5.3L and 6.2L engines has been reduced from 8.5 quarts to 8.0 quarts.

This change has been implemented in SI and will be reflected in future Owner Manuals.

Just realized dealer has been installing the PF48 filter on my and my wife's Sierras instead of PF63. I will be going to the dealer tomorrow and addressing the issue. I dont believe the 48 filter is designed to go that many miles between oil changes like the 63 is. Soo im curious what damage has been caused by this as this is the filter they have used the last few oil changes. My truck has issues with acceleration, engine noise, and other issues the dealer says is normal. Im highly annoyed right now.

After my last oil change I noticed quarter size oil drops under my truck . I looked underneath and it was coming from the filter so I took it to the dealer and they said the filter was defective. First time I ever have had this promblem .

Unless you are going longer than 10k miles the PF48 will work just fine. Especially if you have been taking care of your vehicles on a regular basis and keeping up with oil changes.

Vehicle has been dealer maintained from day one and has had the above mentioned issues since 7k miles the truck now has 28k miles kn it. It has now had 5 oil changes and this time was the first time the correct filter has been on the vehicle. If the truck calls for a PF63 then that's what needs to be on the vehicle because lord knows if i was doing my own oil changes and something happened and i was using PF48 they would say i had the wrong filter on the truck and wouldnt cover the issue.

Mine leaked 2nd oil change and took it to a different dealer. They said it was too tight. Removed, checked gasket and reinstalled. No more leak. Unless you check it yourself it's hard to know the truth. A supposedly bad filter gets the dealer paid again, just sayin!!! Seriously doubt the defective filter story but it's possible....
