Engine Oil Leak from Oil Filter

Vehicle has been dealer maintained from day one and has had the above mentioned issues since 7k miles the truck now has 28k miles kn it. It has now had 5 oil changes and this time was the first time the correct filter has been on the vehicle. If the truck calls for a PF63 then that's what needs to be on the vehicle because lord knows if i was doing my own oil changes and something happened and i was using PF48 they would say i had the wrong filter on the truck and wouldnt cover the issue.

I understand where your coming from. Just that I don't think the dealer would install a product that wouldn't perform as per GM specs. They don't want to pay for any issues that might arrive due to their own negligence. They are the ones that installed the filter so it is in their records and on them if something happens, which I highly doubt will.

As long as the PF48 filter has been around, I did a Google search to see if I could find any complaints that a failed PF48 filter caused engine damage. I didn't find anything on the first Google page related to a damaged engine, just concerns about the quality of the filter. I would think that if it was a concern it would be at the top of the page.

I don't know about these AC Delco filters. A lot of people right here complaining about leaks/failures. I'm going to stay away when I change my own next time. I'm probably going with Fram Ultra or Mobil1 - whichever is cheaper.

I have had 2 complimentary oil changes and both time the AC Delco filter has leaked around the gasket. I am pulling mine off this week and replacing it with a wix or mobile one filter.

The complementary changes are nice, in theory, but I gave up on mine after being repeatedly told I had to wait until OLM was in the 20-percentile range in order to schedule one. Dealer would NOT budge, though I'm told many of you have dealers who do. Couple that with a long drive from home to dealer and work to dealer, and my dealer being open only two Saturdays a month, and 120 miles on the road every day...it was just more practical to change it on my own, especially since I blew through the mileage cap fairly quickly.

I'd never changed oil on a vehicle before, but found it pretty easy (despite getting bathed in hot 5W30 the first time around). I've also been lucky enough to find it pretty cheap, too: thanks to a good in-store promo and a mail-in rebate, my last two changes with Mobil 1 synthetic and a Mobil 1 filter have cost me about $20 each. Just wonder if I'm going to continue doing this once there's snow in the driveway...

I might take the truck in once or twice a year just to have a tech inspect it and make sure it's in good working order, but I suspect I'll be performing most, if not all maintenance items on this going forward.

i changed my oil about a month ago and noticed a gradual oil spot getting bigger in my garage. looked underneath, and oil was dripping from the filter.

i promptly bought a new one and changed it out. hasn't leaked since.. However, I expect the quality of an oem filter to be better than this.

My second oil change I had a filter leak. Different dealer fixed it by loosening the filter and resetting. Said filter was too tight, distorting the gasket.

Just went for my first oil change, smelled burning oil when sitting in traffic (at normal temp). Lo and behold, I found oil on the bottom of the oil filter and the level was higher than the max fill range on the dipstick.. a trip back to the dealer and they "couldn't find any leaks"... so we got the truck on the lift and the tech says the filters are a known problem. Of course I had to answer prerequisite questions about possibly running over a plastic bag or maybe its an animal on the engine block.. They reseated the filter and the level appeared normal.. we'll see how this goes.. maybe I will do my own oil change next time.. free or not.

I have been using AC oil filters in all my GM vehicles for years (have 3 GM cars and trucks at this time) and never had any oil leak problem. I think they fail to tighten the filter sufficiently at these dealerships, hence the leak. If you coat the new gasket with oil and make sure the old gasket is not stuck to the mating surface on the engine block and clean the contact surface, and then hand tighten the filter as tight as you can, you should not have any problems. When changing the filter on my truck, I noticed that it is somewhat difficult to get a good grip on the filter with my hand, so I slightly tighten the filter with a cap filter wrench to make sure it is tight. Maybe they just do it by hand at the dealerships and that's not enough in this particular application.

There is nothing wrong with using a wrench to properly tighten the filter if you cannot access it well by hand. I have several motorcycles and on all of those I must use a filter wrench to tighten the new oil filter because there is not enough room for my hand to go over the filter to tighten it. The key is not to overtighten the filter. They tell you in the owner's manual how many turns you should tighten the filter once the gasket contacts the engine surface.

I've been changing oil in my vehicles for 20 years now and this 2014 5.3L has got me stumped. I've tried a Wix filter and an AC Delco PF63E and they both leak after a thousand miles or so...I can unscrew and reset them, but will eventually leak/drip again. The crazy part about the AC Delco, the sticker indicates 1 full turn after gasket contact. I might be able to get 1/4 turn before it won't move anymore, even with a strap wrench on it...and no I'm not putting a ton of force on it with the strap wrench. It's almost like the mating surface on the block isnt smooth enough to allow the gasket to "slide", and yes, I lubricate it with oil prior to installing it.

I think the AC Delco filters that have an "E" after the number indicates their economy line. Those have been prone to leaking. Seen quite a few where I work.

The wix leaked as well. I took it to the dealer and asked them to install a filter, which they did. 500 miles later, it's leaking again. Back to the dealer.

Sounds like your oil filter adapter could be loose. Just a thought to check it.

Thx southern Sierra, I have checked the filter adapter previously and it was tight. I'm leaning on either a casting defect or the mating surface on the block wasn't machined smooth enough to allow for a proper seal.

    • Diesel $5.42 at the truck stop on the hi-way
    • I'm not sure if this should be a new topic, let me know if it's out of place. This my first post. Thanks 85077522 - AC Delco GM Genuine Parts Brake Master Cylinders. Anyone else had to replace this brake master cylinder yet. I didn't do any brake work, it looks like new parts and I've had the truck for about 4k miles, 119k total miles.  When it started to throw codes I did the calibrations with a bidirectional scanner and got the codes to clear but they came back so I did the routine; base bleed, automated bleed and final base bleed. All that with Bosch ES16-32N fluid (please look it up). That seemed to fix it but 100ish miles later it failed again so I ran the same process but with a pressure bleeder this time and got the same results, fixed for 100ish miles. The original fluid looked bad and I thought I got most of it out, it could've been the wrong fluid. The codes; P25A2, C05B0-00, C2A1B. I can get them to clear but not for long. The C05B0 indicates a leak in the front circuit (which is bone dry) so I'm thinking of doing the bleed process on that front again today and I don't know if that's taboo to just do the front but at this point it seems like it's worth the try anyway. The new master cylinder/module unit is supposed to get here today. But now I'm pretty much convinced this install is over my head. I've called several shops and some mobile guys that I know but this thing is like radio active material, scary wise. I did get 2 local shops say they should be able to do it, one says he has the SPS2 programing capability. And with the battery disconnected is there supposed to be pedal resistance, mine is to the floor, then if I pump it I can get some resistance. I had a panic stop prior to this issue which may have contributed from what I read. And on the first attempt to bleed and hydraulic test the scanner listed things to look for and one was any gaps between the pad and rotors which I did notice on the RF corner and I removed the outer pad (where the gap was) cleaned it and the hardware and didn't see a gap after that but will re-check it. I read that if pushing the caliper pistons back then you're supposed to open the bleeder so as to not push fluid backwards into the abs module or it will damage it. If that's true then that's also a possibility from the previous owner having the brakes changed before I got it. I'm using an XTool ip500 scanner. Any suggestions, questions and comments welcome.
    • Next Friday will be my 6 week point from my right knee replacement.  The surgeon says it will be fine if I choose to drive after this checkup.  I know I could drive now but best to do as my surgeon (and my wife) tell me.  Richard compared being 62 to 72.  I remember when I was in my early 60's I was experiencing slow but regular decline in my mobility.  Thanks to good medical support,  i continued to fight the speed and spread of this decline. During my 60's I worked on non-surgical methods and just when I turned 70, my orthopedic surgeon recommended joint replacements.  In a little over a year, I had one shoulder and both knees replaced.  This hasn't been a terribly fun experience, but worth the discomfort as my future mobility health trajectory has reversed.  It is a treat to now be watching my mobility. balance and confidence steadily improve!
