Cab Clearance Light

Has anyone installed clearance lights on their '14/'15 1500? I talked to the service manager the other day and he stated that while they do not do installs he saw no warranty issues in terms of the skin/rust/corrosion. His only stated concern was bad wiring creating a short.

I do tow a wide, 20' equipment trailer and live in a rural area with crappy lighting where the extra lighting would be beneficial. However, the truth of the matter is I think a set of Recon's would look d$@mned cool on my truck, especially after I get it leveled:

Anyone have pics of cab lights on these new trucks or thoughts on how to tie into the existing lighting? I was thinking that if I did this I would run a relay, but I'm no sure where I would tap in to trigger the relay.

why run a relay when you can just tap into one of the running light wires? If you get the LED cab lights they do not enough amps to do any harm.

Honestly, in my mind the idea of using a relay was kinda a good house keeping/good habitats thing. You are entirely right that the draw from the leds wouldn't be sufficient enough to cause issue.

I had had the thought though, and I could be completely wrong, that in the event that there was some sort of short/malfunction with the wiring in the clearance lights that the relay might help to isolate that issue from the truck's OEM system. Granted I'm likely over thinking the issue.

I think you're overthinking the whole situation here. LED lights won't do any harm. I don't think you need to relay.

In all seriousness I've yet to come across any pics of the new body style 1500's with clearance lights. I'd really not like to have to be the guinea pig on this.

Tell me about it. I can handle the drilling, its the messing up the measurement parts that I start getting twitchy about. I figure that if I do it I can get measurements from the local dealership and make up a template in order to simplify getting things lined up correctly.

I did this with my last truck, a 14 Ram 1500. Pacer smoked clearance lights. There's a local shop here that does it for ~150. They did an absolutely amazing job. No complaints whatsoever. I plan on having them do it to my 15 Sierra 1500 probably around mid September. I'll post pics then.

How can this mod be properly sealed?!

Drilling doesn't scare me, it's the sealing up part that freaks me out!

I would also like to do this mod but do not want water leaking in

I'm pretty sure that the key in most cases is silicone.

Yup. They even make these below waterline sealants in boats like 3M 4200 and 5200. I think if water comes in you should have bigger concerns. On a serious note I like using Permatex clear silicone in the "cheese whizz can". It puts out a very fine bead and the silicone dries much, much more clear than others.

I added extra LED sidemarkers from wesbar to my boat trailer for better visibility at night. I doubled up the outer fender markers. I found this makes it much more visible at night. I also found the Wesbars to be much brighter than Optronics.

Thanks for the heads up on Wesbar's! Pics? I've been wanting to put brighter lights n my equipment trailer. One of these years I also want to get around to wiring up a set of LED turn indicator lights for the sides of trailer fenders. At 20' bed length it's not huge, but it's long enough that side turn signals would be a nice feature.

I did this, was a super easy install took me 3 hours of triple checking everything and trying not to cry as I drilled the first hole into my brand new truck. I got the smoked ones from go recon and used GE Black Silicone with the install.
