Spare Key for 2015 Silverado - DON'T need computer chip

Recommended Posts

I got a new 2015 Silverado and would like to get a spare key made that will just open the doors - so I dont need the computer chip or anything. I tried my local places and none of them can cut these new style keys where the engraving is "inside" the metal.

Does anyone know of a place that can do this besides the dealership? Is it even possible? I do NOT need the FOB or anything... just a spare key that will open the doors (and yes I know that OnStar app can do it as well)

Thanks!
Jeff

Read some time ago that it is mostly a dealer cut because it requires a special machine for "center cut" or "laser cut" keys. But I think there may be some Home Depot or Lowes stores that could do it. May want to try a locksmith store?

Here is a link to a thread that might help...it also discusses key fobs, but there is a lot about replacement keys an such that might help...

Subscribed for the same. I just want one to hide on the truck somewhere since I spend a lot of time in the boonies and despite what the OnStar adds (and the official OnStar lady at the world's biggest GMC dealer) tell you, most of OnStar's communications are done via cell tower, not satellite. A buddy locked his keys in the truck a while back in middle of nowhere and after hiking 2 miles to a house and calling OnStar, they couldn't unlock his doors due to lack of cell service.

I got 2 spare keys but I had to order them through the dealer. They needed the code number that came with the original keys to order the keys pre-cut from GM. You then need to do the learn procedure to train the keys to the truck.

I did find out that if you unlock the truck with the spare trained key, the alarm will sound after 30 seconds. It seems that unlocking with a key doesn't disarm the alarm as it did on by 2003. To get around this, you need to unlock with the key and start the truck within 30 seconds to disable the alarm.

This means that you can't buy a key black without the chip. if such a thing even exist, and use it to unlock the truck as it will set off the alarm.

Please see thread above. There are others in the same boat as you and they share how they addressed this...they got a separate key, but had it programmed so as not to disable their truck in case they wanted to use the spare key to start it as well. It also explains their learnings and ramifications...don't assume this key for '14 - '15 truck is like previous models...they are, of course, different. I hope this helps.

I believe only the dealer can program the chipped keys on these K2 trucks. On the older trucks you can do your own programming of the keys.

And may disable the truck IF YOU ATTEMPT TO START TRUCK WITH THE SPARE KEY where it has to be towed to the dealer to be resolved...details in the thread I posted above. ?

Can I ask how much 2 keys from the dealer cost?

So if you do NOT program the key after you get it, you can open your door but your truck will be disabled?

And if you DO program the key after you get it, you can open your door but the alarm will sound after 30 seconds and you must start the truck before that? (and the truck will not be disabled)

Do I have that correct? Has anyone tried to open the door with the key before programming it?

You can program them yourself. We can only get chipped keys at the dealer, there is no offering for a non-chipped key.

Programming is easy. Take an original to the truck, turn to the on position, then off and remove. Take your new key and then do the same thing but don't remove it. When you turn it on, there will be a message in the DIC that pops up with total # of keys programmed. Wait for that message, then start the truck.

Coded keys are $43.86 msrp plus tax. Uncoded (the dealer cuts them if they have a machine) are $43.86 and they may charge you to cut it.

I think the $43.86 a key sounds right. My local dealer is strictly MSRP on parts.

After I opened the door with the new programmed key and the alarm sounded, I had to run into the house to get the remote. By the time I got back the alarm had stopped. I locked and unlocked with the remote and the truck started fine with the new key. When you start the truck after an alarm event the horn honks, 3 times I think, to tell you there was an alarm activation. I didn't try to start the truck directly with the new key after the alarm, I used the fob first.

I'm not sure if the truck disables after an alarm event. Maybe the owners manual has some info.

Just get a work truck key cut for your spare. I had the dealer cut 2 extra at the truck purchase.

Does the WT key not have the built in RFID chip? If so it will still set off the alarm after you unlock the door unless the factory key was left in the truck and you can start it up right away.

Not sure but I have a WT so i'm not sure if it's inside of the plastic part or not.

Truck will only be disabled IF you attempt to START with a key that is not programmed...you can open the door...alarm will sound...need to start truck to turn off alarm...but IF KEY IS NOT PROGRAMMED, it will not start, it will not reset alarm and it will disable truck.

Again, read other thread in link above if you want further clarification. There are a lot of great learnings there.
