Backup camera idea

Ok, I have searched and haven't seen anyone answer this. Is there a camera that is even half way decent that can be retrofitted to our oem spot. I have an idea, but not the know how to do it. I have a bunch of old smartphones that I no longer use that have outstanding cameras built in. Saw a YouTube video where someone took the camera out of their phone and that got me thinking. Cold you just take our oem camera housing apart and use the camera from a phone in it? It just sucks that a 50k truck has such a pitiful backup camera.

You can retrofit the OEM cam or buy aftermarket. Both have been done.

 

What do you want to see that you can't avoid hitting with the OEM cam?

I get the "it's just a guide" argument. But when a truck costs 50k, I should be able to see clearly whatever the heck I want to in the camera, especially when cars costing half as much have perfectly clear ones. The OEM one sucks. There's got to be something better we can do.

As far as weather, it could be sealed with marine sealant. If it works on offshore fishing boats, it'll work on a backup camera.

And it still wont fix a thing, the native resolution of the infotainment system is not high enough to display a high resolution camera.

So TJ74,the problem is mainly the infotainment system and not camera per-say

Me too. But look at us ... We don't need texting displayed on our dashboard, nor Pandemic, push button start, color shifting dash lights, ability to watch movies while driving, etc.. We're obviously out of step.

Honestly, I love my camera more for hitching up the trailer than reversing. And how I did it before a camera was to back up, stop, put it in park, get out, look at how far I am from the trailer, get back in, back up some more, rinse and repeat, including overshooting and having to go forward. I like the camera.

Ha, I hear ya on that one. I'm the same way. I just don't like the ones who say that can't live without when they back out of their driveway.

I don't see how you could improve it, its a back up cam! are you driving down the road in reverse?
