Recoil affect on lower back

I'm wondering if there are any techniques for shooting rifle ( 223/308) off the bench or stances for pistol that would minimize the recoil affect on the lower back. Any thoughts or ideas anyone would care to share?

My situation is that I now have a ruptured disk- L5-S1. I just got my first shot, which helped tremendously...but I've been wanting to get out and go shoot now that I'm feeling better.

Thanks in advance,

Mark

There are a number of recoil absorbing bench rests out there. Weighting the device down is the key. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Allen-Recoil-Reducer-Bench-Rest-and-Vise-Green-Black/17403735

Midway seems to have a lot of new stuff all the time. Check there as well.

I've also used a sandbag placed between my shoulder and the gun butt to add weight that the gun has to move.

For the pistol, try a slightly bent elbow hold. Some of the good shooters use a slightly bent elbow hold.

I feel like bench shooting, especially with some kind of bipod should by itself really reduce recoil. As for the pistol, there isn't much you can do to minimize recoil but I'd say a 22 conversion for your pistol (if available) could help. If not, a large 9mm like a Beretta 92 or similar will have less felt recoil. My VP9 is also soft shooting.

I would try from a bench, with a bag and bipod. Not sure what 223 you have that kicks, but even a 308 should be manageable with a bag. A good recoil pad could help some too.

I shoot an XDm 9mm and the recoil is very light. A full size 9mm will shoot easy. I like to use a "shotgun" stance most of the time, it's comfortable for me even when shooting something like a 44. I'd experiment and see what works.

Adding weight the gun has to move is the simplest method. Anything you do to add weight will help. A heavy sand/shot bag placed between the gun and shoulder will tame an elephant rifle.

Probably easiest thing tO do is shoot smaller caliber.

The 223 is just a Colt 6920 AR. I know it doesn't have much of a kick at all but it's been awhile since I've been able to get out and shoot it (back issue, work, weather, kids, and on and on...) so my recollection of how much recoil is skewed. Plus, I haven't owned it that long. My apprehension is getting out there and having that slightest jerk to my back to make it worse... And of course going out there and messing it up and feeling like a dumba$$ for doing it...haha.

I currently have a 45 auto (1911) that I can try the stances mentioned, but it gives me the perfect reason to go buy a 9mm. You can never have too many, right?

Thanks for the feedback guys, I really appreciate it.

They definitely offer 22 conversions for the 1911. Something to think about.

That's true Mike. I had thought about a conversion many years back, but the model I have is a 1991A1 commander series, which at the time I didn't see a compatible conversion kit. So, I eventually went with Ruger 22 pistol. I might should just stick with it for awhile.

Shooting prone, with a rifle, may be of benefit. Does it hurt your back when you lie down and get into position behind the rifle?

Whether it's long gun (bench or prone) or pistol; keep your shoulders square to the target (that'll minimize twisting of upper body). For pistol, lean into it and bend your elbows slightly. Let your mass absorb the shock.

appleseedinfo.org has some good, back to basics techniques that may help too. Good luck!

If your back is that bad, don't screw around with anything. Sounds like you're in pain enough . Shoot a 22 and be happy.

You could get a muzzle brake on the 308. Should reduce the recoil quite a bit. Don't forget the earplugs because it will be louder.

With enough muzzle brake, you can make any firearm pull away from you, but everyone around you will hate you for it. Airport Loud...

Put a standard A2 stock on it and fill the butt trap with lead sot. Recoil problem solved.
