I haven't looked really hard but it is late and I'm tired, new to the forum so I'm sorry if this has been answered already. I just bought an 06 Avalanche and the Tpms is on saying trie pressure low. I've reset the the Tpms and still on. I looked in the door jam and the factory size tire is 16 I have 09 (maybe) Tahoe 20's. The tires are inflated properly I usually take off 5 psi from the tire max. Inflated to 32 psi but the DIC keeps reading 15 PSI. Would I need to get the dealer to re-flash the computer?

Which tire is being shown at 15psi? Can you get to the valve stem on the spare tire? If so, verify the pressure in the spare.

 

Because someone changed the wheel/tire combo to 20s, they likely put the pressure sensors on the new wheels, but, perhaps your spare tire still has a sensor in it that is interfering with the sensor in the wheel at the low pressure location.

 

Can you initiate the setting of the TPMS by using the deflate air method? If so, when you get to the tire that is reported being low, does changing the air pressure move the setup to the next tire/wheel?

 

What is the air pressure supposed to be according to the door? If the truck had higher load range tires, they likely took a lot more pressure. I would expect to trigger all the tires/wheels being low, not just one.

I would ignore it, personally. Could try the procedure in the owners manual ... but if it doesn't work the first shot, don't waste your time trying again. Just another system to get you to part with your money at a GM dealer.

 

With my '07, when I got my first set of aftermarket wheels with sensors, the damn truck would NOT accept the new sensors, no matter how many times I ran around the truck letting air out of the tires. What a stupidly designed system!! Lucky for me at the time, it was still under the bumper-to-bumper warranty. They waved their $400 magic wand around the truck and had them all working in 2 seconds. What a friggin joke!!

 

Now I just ignore the light when I throw my winter wheels on. Not worth the aggravation. It's a dumb system anyway, especially if you check your tire pressure on a regular basis, like your supposed to ...

TPMS working properly are great. Saves tires.

 

Your problem of low pressure sounds like a bad sender / sender error. Senders are located in the tires.

Now here is a thought. Wheels came from the 09 Tahoe with tires wheels and sensors as a set. I just did a quick check and the part numbers for the sensors on the 09 are different than your 06. So maybe the sensors are not compatable withyour system.

I was under the impression that all GM sensors used the same frequency, so year-model wouldn't matter. Not sure there.

I would expect the sensors to completely fail if they were not compatible. GM would be creating a huge nightmare for themselves if they let sensors connect, but send data not compatible with the firmware inside the BCM.

 

I bought one of those "magic wands" back in 2011 off of Ebay for $61. Found the receipt for it just the other day. It is a K-Tool KTI71990 that was brand new in sealed packaging. Don't know why they are so expensive now. Looks like I could sell mine used and nearly triple my money..

Yeah it's friggin ridiculous. This is the #1 reason I HATE electronics. It's all just a rabbit-hole of expense from one end to the next ...

Probably expensive because they are required now, before 2011 they were optional. I can use the air out method on my 2011 but it only seems to work if the sensor goes below the pressure that would trigger a low pressure warning. Also after changing winter/summer tire sets, before starting the pairing, I let everything set for about 30 minutes (take a break) to make sure none of the sensors are still transmitting. Has worked so far.

The only reason I bought it was I have the old mechanic logic, if a tool costs less than a hundred dollars, and saves me from having to stoop down a few times a year, I buy it.

They all read 15 psi. One I let go over a little and it read 16 psi. I've not bought the trick completely yet. So I'm going to get them fix it before I do buy it. Just curious as to why this was doing this, and what I could possibly do to fix it in the future.
