i decided to check over my truck before it goes into the dealer for its last free service. i have quit a bit of up and down play on the drivers side cv axle coming out of the housing. how much play is normal. the passenger side has only in and out play no up and down

Can someone please check their drivers side CV axle right where it comes out of the diff housing just kind of like to know if this is normal or if I should bring it up with the dealership

Just tell them you are concerned with the amount of play and have them check it. There is probably only millimeters of difference, not enough someone from the other side of the country can tell you if it is good or not on your truck by playing with theirs and going off your description. Just before my warranty runs out I usually take it to the dealer and make up a few things just to have them check out vital parts such as transmission, drivetrain, ect. Just have them look at it and tell them you are concerned, that will solve your problem...

Isn't the diff covered by the power train warranty? So even though your free maintenance is up your 6-100k takes over?

Is the drivers side shaft the short side? If so it is probably normal. The short side is likely going to have more rocking than the long side because it has one bearing then the other end is supported by the side gear, and it is very short. Probably similar to my old 2002 front diff I took a quick photo of.

At the end of the day if it does not leak, no noise, no metal in the lube, you are good to go.

I haven't checked my new truck, but on my old one this was totally normal. I even replaced the bearing and seal before I knew, the new bearing had the exact same play.
