I thought you said build a race car, lol. Who do I look like, Big Chief, lol? Supposedly that's a Pontiac 482 in the "CrowMod". It's gnarly though.

As far as the setup for this test.... Are you doing it as a straight replacement, removing the flapper, what about the resonator..... Blah blah blah hehe

UPDATE: Testing was delayed as Murphy was in town the last few days. Our welder gun trigger took a dump and on the way to go pick up the parts, the other truck with the GM Borla system got rear ended at a stoplight. Perfect. To add to it, the V-band clamps we ordered to make changing the mufflers out easier haven't come in yet. Our plan was to fit the pipe upstream and down of the muffler in the truck with the V-band clamp M/F pieces. We ordered a set for each muffler also. We're going to weld pipe to the inlet/outlet of the muffler, if need be, to make up the length and offset differences and attach the corresponding V-band pieces to them. That way we could literally swap the mufflers in and out in a few minutes. So, delayed but certainly not discouraged. The welder is fixed and ready to go and the V-bands will be delivered tomorrow and we'll get cracking. The truck that was damaged that was to be our basline/constant for comparison only received minor damage and the exhaust was not harmed. So we're going to try and collect our baseline measurements and videos today before it goes to the body shop for repairs.

 

P.S. Kye Kelly got that a$$ drug by Birdman (Gary Weatherly) this weekend at Kennedale.

Was about to order a muffler for my Denali, then saw this thread a little while ago. Been waiting to see these results before I order.

Out of curiosity, which muffler were you going to order and what was your plan? And is that your '69 in the avatar?

I was planning on going with a 14" magnaflow.

 

Yes it is my Camaro. LS3 / T56 hoping to boost it over next winter.

I cant wait to see the the results either I am looking at either the magnaflow catback system or the Borla Type S catback system. Also looking at the Volant cold air intake system. I live East of Houston in the mont belvieu area. cant wait for the videos. Also does anyone now a good place to get a Spray in bedliner?

Well, she's gorgeous. You've clearly spent the $$ to make it what it should be. Sh*t, I know what a set of those multi-piece wheels run, they're not a game. Good for you. Boost? Snails or blower? I'm certainly a fan of excess, but I'm sure you've already got a healthy cam in the LS3 and that alone wakes it up to let the gear grabbing while looking out of the passenger window begin. (Sigh) but alas, our quest to twist frames never ends.

We technically will not be testing an off the shelf catback system from anyone, but instead designing our own in hopes to replicate the desireable sound levels and frequency ranges people love so much from the GM Borla system. Other than the tube itself smoothing out air flow, dropping a better filter in the stock airbox will yield almost identical results. If they would just sell you the tube and elbow, it would do exactly what you need using the stock airbox.

 

I can't vouch for the Mont Belvieu area, but there are some places on the east side of Houston that do excellent work, reasonably priced and have been around forever to stand behind their work. One is in Baytown called John's Trim Shop and the other is a touch further west called Brian's Tint Shop. A quick Google search will find them in seconds. John's may be a bit higher on their pricing, but they do meticulous work. Brian's caters more towards the guys who build show trucks, which also means they do meticulous work. Start with those 2 and see what they quote you.

LOL yes its quite the money pit. I enjoy it, but definitely put more into it than I should. Its neverending. I feel like after I boost it I will be happy with it (ive said that before). Im not sure yet on direction, but probably turbo. Appreciate the compliments.

We are heading to pick up mufflers this morning to begin testing this weekend. We will take baseline decible readings from my truck, which has the stock exhaust but is lifted with a mild mud tire and there IS a slight hint of tire noise. We already took measurements from the truck with the GM Borla system. We will only be running a handful of Magnaflow mufflers this time. So far we plan to pick up a 12256/14256 and a 12226/14226 for the 5.3 trucks which are the same mufflers except for inlet/outlet size as the 12259/14259 and 12229/14229. Are these the most common numbers folks are considering? Thanks.

    • It really is comical when people don’t agree or see the reason some people prefer the older vehicles. They become condescending. All the while they may be busting their knuckles on old vehicles. I have found memories of swapping out engines in my old GM cars in a weekend without much hassle. Unlike today. One wrong move a computer will shut you down. Even on something as easy as a brake job. There’s a pretty comical YouTuber called the car wizard. A garage owner who puts it all in perspective. Another Vicegrip garage that’s shows just how tough the old stuff is. 
    • I was around and remember that era very well, so I'm calling b/s on that statement. If they were that bad no police department or taxi company would've bought a single one ... but they were used in both services (and fire) for DECADES. They were bulletproof and proven. Even the early 21st century ones weren't too bad! The early models were legendary.   Mine is proof, but people like atlas are blinded by agenda and refuse to believe facts right before their very eyes.   Even decades after they were built, a new generation started driving them, posting all their builds and shenanigans on Grandmarq.net and Crownvic.net. The failures would show up then, since they all were deep past 100k-150k miles by that point, and younger drivers tend to be a little aggressive, especially with vehicles than can lay a one-tire fire for as long as you hold your foot in it. They've more than proven themselves over the decades.   The only thing that'll really take them out is road salt. The bodies and sheet metal were garbage. A victim of the cheapout FoMoCo and GM have been partaking in before then, and since.   Today it's the stuff that counts - the undercarriage that rots away first!    GMs Caprice was no slouch either. Reliable as a stone ax - the opposite of what they build now.    
    • Let me know how your vehicles do in 10 years. You don't know ******, kid. 😂    There's a reason that Panther platform was used as police, fire, and taxi service for DECADES ... long before you were born, apparently.
    • If your connector also has a big lever to get the connector on and off, you don't want to force the lever either way, as it becomes a bigger problem if you bust the lever or the mechanism it works.
    • It's just useful to disconnect the battery to prevent odd shorting out when unplugging/plugging stuff together.  I also  touch the two cable ends together (after disonnecting) to drain the small amount of stored battery energy in various modules.   I believe the main system where you need to be more concerned with, so you need to do the above and then wait some time, iss when you are working on the air bag system, to prevent inadvertent firing of the air bags.   The in-cab switches are just that, plain switches, it's generally not a problem to swap them in/out.  For my '12, I'll get an error message on the dash if I power up the truck w them unplugged, but that's it (power up= turn the ignition on).   The ITBC located above the spare tire is a computer that manages the trailer brake system.  That is probably more important to have the battery disconnected.  It does have to be programmed to the truck, either before or after it's installed, for it to work.  For my '12, I had a very hard time reinstalling the main connector to it (IDK if yours is the same or not), it turned out the silicon seal was jamming up, preventing it from going on all the way.  I finally got it fully installed by lubing the seal with a bit of dielectric grease, then it slid on and latched in place easily.
