The oil analysis showed the oil was in perfect condition so why are you sweating the color change so much?

Well I get sick and tired of hearing how it is not normal from Amsoil themselves...... so I won't use anymore of this 5W20 I have and either sell it or dump it out. I am going to swap to 5W30 and maybe even try Mobil 1 to see if it does anything odd. Pretty sure it is something mostly localized to this batch of Amsoil I have. I bought 2 cases of 4 quart jugs so I still have 16 quarts of it or so.....

 

They even think I may have gotten mislabelled 5W20 Dominator racing oil as it is reddish in nature..... so time will tell.

Why aren't you using the 0W-20 grade that the lubrication system of your 6.2 was designed to use?

Because I don't want too lol. It's designed and spec'd to run 5w30 as much as it is 0w20. The wet sump LT1 vette run 5w30 oil and it's the identical part number for part number off the same line longblock... Either way that's not the issue anyhow.

Sounds like in your case, this red color is just the nature of the beast. Two different vehicles are turning red oil. Could be a ton of factors that would cause this. Your driving style, conditions and geographical location. It would be interesting to see if anyone that lives near you using AMSOIL is showing red oil as well. I'm surprised AMSOIL has not contacted you back on their findings. Since the UOA came back normal then it isn't a concern.

 

Changing to 5w-30 will not change anything but could cause issues if, and that is a big if, you have any warranty claims and it's oil related. Then they could deny your warranty. But I seriously doubt you will have issues.

Yeah warranty doesn't mean shit to me anyhow... I would never let a "technician" open my engines up.... I'm sorry but I have more formal and informal engine experience than probably anyone in the gm service department does. I will rebuild the engine myself and build it properly... not dealer service department scab job... or those terrible gm remans. Yuck. A friend of mine owns an engine shop and I build with him or on my own... the stuff you see from gm crates is pretty scary...and its amazing they run... and usually well enough no one notices for years that the engine is headed for catastrophe.

 

The funny thing is I use Amsoil otherwise and it's not red.... my buddies all do... again not red. Amsoil is taking forever as the sample went ground courier to some US location so it will likely be weeks before I hear anything from them, if ever at all. I prefer 5w30 and I use it in everything.... nobody but gm even has 0w20 and I am personally not a fan of water for oil to hope for better fuel economy. I don't keep any record or written track of my services either and since gm would want 3 miles of receipts for their joke of a warranty I wouldn't get that anyway. I honestly just would like to know why it's red.... personal interest.

 

I am not posting on this again until Amsoil replies if they ever do.

Ever get word back from Amsoil? I was planning on ditching M1 for Amsoil but I'd like to hear why your oil came out red before I'm willing to make the change.

Nope. Not a peep as of today being the 7th of March. They have had the sample in their possession for a couple weeks now. I expect no reply from them ever.

 

I bought a fresh batch of 5w30 Signature and will be dumping the second go around of red 5W20 for that this upcoming Wednesday or Thursday. Then it will be a test to see if a different viscosity from purchased about a year after the 5W20 I had at home turns red too. The GM bulk oil the dealer put in the truck before I switched to Amsoil ran about 2500 miles and was just brown coming out so I am pretty confident it's just whatever property of that 5W20 I had causing discoloration. Nothing more.

Pretty strange I guess it's not as uncommon as I would have expected. Considering the big additive package in Amsoil, I shouldn't be surprised that the used oil looks different.

Amsoil replied...... and it's what I expected..... and I quote.

 

"Based on these results, the sample of AMSOIL ALM was in good condition, and there was nothing abnormal in the sample that would cause the color to change from amber to red."

 

So no answer and case closed. I stopped using that 5W20 and thus far the 5W30 I have in the truck is just darkening but not turning red.

Not sure if this was asked but have you used any E85 fuel? Just curious.

6.2's aren't e85 compatible stock and e85 doesn't exist here unless I want to buy drums... so no lol. The fuel I run has 10% ethanol and that's it. The 10% thing is just like all 87 octane sold here and nobody else's oil turns red. I have about 1000 miles now on this 5w30 and so far no color change.
