For the guys changing their own oil....

I was going to start my extended changes with this oil change but I am glad I didn't. My truck is 2015 6.2 Silverado with just over 10000 miles on the clock. This run of oil was almost bang on 6000 miles and according to the oil life monitor it was at 48% life still. I checked level today and wasn't really happy with the smell and the color so I dumped it. The oil looks like slightly darkened ATF...... which obviously is not the case when it goes in. I am running Amsoil Signature series synthetic..... and maybe that is the norm for it because my 05's 6 liter has a habit of turning red too... Unless it's the alcohol in the fuel as I routinely run 94 octane I both those trucks which is 10% ethanol.

My concern though is more the smell..... so I want to see what fuel dilution level I am at. The oil is so thin it's like water anyway and the truck was not overfull so it's hard to judge if there is anything for fuel in it. It has an odd odor I am not used to for used engine oil. As you can see the oil is actually quite clear but the red color in any amount makes it appear black. That's why I shook it around before the photo.



On another note for those running Airaid products be careful. I have their Junior Kit on this truck and the tube is top notch...... the filter though went back in the box tonight. I am running the Synthamax dry filter and am tempted to email Airaid about it. I have had this BS before on my 05 with oem paper filters too..... they don't seal to the lid of the stock box and let dust in. Sure enough I had a very light coat of dust in the tube and you could see at the fender side of the box the Airaid filter was letting dust between it and the lid. I compared the Airaid to the stock filter and the gasket on the stocker is about twice as thick.... so back in it went.

I will but I don't have a kit yet to send the sample away with.... and no one around here actually sells kits lol. If nothing else there is a lab I used to deal with in the past I can get a kit from. I wouldn't have results at this point anyway as I just changed the oil lol.

 

I don't know if there is anything wrong with the truck but this is a way to find out. If anyone else has had similar appearing oil I am all ears lol. It's cold here on and off and the truck does idle a lot so maybe that's the issue.... hard to say.

 

Edit: I just ordered a kit from a lab and they will probably send it to me via Purolator next week sometime.

What color is Amsoil Signature series synthetic out of the bottle? I did a google search for "Amsoil Signature series synthetic" and it only showed a picture of the ATF fluid which is deep red. All the other photos shows sealed bottles. That got me to thinking, are you SURE that every bottle was engine oil? and if it was all engine oil, what color was the contents of each bottle?

Lol... I'm not quite that stupid.... Came out of two sealed 4 quart jugs and out of the jug it's a translucent gold color. My 2005 Sierra's 6 liter goes red too so I am assuming it's normal maybe... I dunno. It's not the color as much as the smell anyway.

 

That said I would love to know what chemical reaction occurs with Amsoil to cause the red color shift. Some others try using the cleaning varnish thing.... well the trucks engine is basically still brand new so that's not the issue.

Probably it's simply heat changing the color.

Hard to tell on the smell... almost like brakekleen in the oil. I am used to gasoline riddled oil... my 322 John Deere lawn tractors Yanmar had a love for filling the crankcase with gasoline... This could be fuel but I'm not sure. I actually run that 94 stuff in that lawn tractor and have for 10 years now as it stops it from dieseling lol. It doesn't smell like that though. Here's a comparison for the color.

 

 

One could argue there is a slight red tinge to the new oil too but nothing like once it's in service. I would just like to hear from someone why... and bobistheoilguy has no answers either as this is pretty common.

Coolant turns oil to milk and separates as the densities are nowhere near the same. Even low concentrations that let's the water boil off still let's the glycol remain. No and no it doesn't.

 

The color shift is what the oil does I guess but I would like to know what is reacting and causing the change. I could email amsoil too I suppose.

I would email Amsoil and ask why it turned red. I wasn't trying to insult you when I ask about being sure it was not ATF. I was thinking that maybe it was a mislabeled bottle due to color and you stating how thin the oil was.

 

We use to add a quart of Dextron 2 to the engine oil about 25 miles before an oil change if the engine had been neglected. Note: changed oil filter at the same time ATF was added and changed it again at oil change.

Amsoil has been emailed in this instance... my buddy that's a dealer shot them one yesterday. He went and checked his Titan and his oil looks normal lol. I need to drain my 05 too and I am pretty sure it's going to be beet juice as well... and that's a different viscosity being 5w30 I have 5W20 in my Silverado as I have lots leftover from my Fords... and I don't think they went red.... but this was a newer batch of oil I went too. This stuff when warm is about the consistency of water out of the bottle.

 

It's all speculation until it's analyzed anyway and I will update as I get information.

 

If I do switch oil brands it will be something I can get locally... no more weird shit lol. I doubt I will though. There are plenty of red turning amsoil cases since like 2012 or so and it's normal apparently... but I would like to know the cause... and then my fuel dilution level as these direct injected pigs have a habit of doing that.

I used to run Signature Series 5W-30 in my 2001 4.8, and it never turned red. Just got more black the longer it was in the truck. Just for reference..

The 5w30 signature never used to turn red in my 05's 6 liter either.. not sure now. I am warming the truck up currently to change it and it just looks brown..... but it was reddish the last time I swapped it which I thought was odd.

My 2015 in the same cup on the right and my 05's oil in the cup on the left. They honestly smell the same now that the beet juice is at room temp... it smelled funny when it was warm. The 05's is hot and just smells like engine oil. It's reddish but more just normal dark amber. Both containers a clear so as to not tint the fluid.
