2016 whine noise

Tire noise and differential whine are completely different noises. Noisy tires tend to make steady humming noise which increases in level with speed. Differential whine is higher pitch whining noise that seems to be most pronounced in 40 to 50MPH range. Often it occurs only while the differential is under load, i.e. your foot on the gas pedal, sometimes only while coasting (foot off the gas pedal). The latter case is of course less annoying because most of the time the differential is under load.

40-50 is the speed the truck vibrates when it's in 4wd.

Maybe it is my diff. But my noise does get speed up with speed and slow down with speed and still present if I let it coast with the foot off the pedal.

Mine doesn't change when foot is on the gas or off so it leads me to believe it's not the diff. Mine is a steady noise that picks up and slows down relative to the speed. It's the loudest at about 50-55.

I have an appointment at the dealer on Monday so we'll see what they say.

Mine is most heard around 35-55 but I don't think it will still whine with my foot off the gas.

Good luck with dealer please report back. It has to be a transmission or rear end issue imo

So I drive todayrally focusing on the sound and the speed.

I have to say it does speed up as I speed is there from 20 mph to 75 mph +.

It is loudest between 40-50 mph.

It doesn't change with the foot off or on the gas. It doesn't change in 2wd or 4wd.

It just speeds up and slows down with the speed of the vehicle.

I drive 40 miles to work, and I do believe it is half as loud at the end of my drive which correlates with the tires being warm.

I clearly don't remember this when I test drove the truck over an entire weekend. But the temps were in to 50-60 degree range.

I really started to nice it as it got colder out (30 degrees or below).

Today was he loudest it's been, am the temps were 12 - 20 degrees.

I really think it's tire noise, but without disengaging the rear diff while driving, I'll never know.

Another possibility is a bad wheel bearing.

I'm taking the truck in on Sunday so they can work on it Monday when I leave out of town. I'll bring it up again. And by again I mean I already took it in for this before and they said it was the tires. The tech pretty much said the Goodyear SRA's are crap.

What tires is everyone else running and what kind of temps are you seeing where you live?

Just want to see if we all have something in common.

Let us know how you make out at the dealership. I'm bringing mine for the first time Monday so I'll update on what they tell me. Because I have the max tow package I have the goodyear Eagles on mine. I've only had the truck about a month so I haven't driven it in warmer weather to see if the temp has something to do with tire noise. I want to listen to the truck while they have it on the lift to determine where the noise is coming from. If I don't hear anything then it's the tires.

Hear anything at the dealership?

They have my truck but are doing a couple the things so I won't get it back for a while.

I brought it in this morning and the noise was pretty noticeable. My uncle was with me and he heard it for the first time as well. We get over to the dealership and it sat there for a few minutes inside before someone took it for a ride. Guy comes out and tells me they couldn't hear anything. Needless to say I was pretty mad and told the guy why would I bring it 40 miles to have it looked at if there was nothing wrong. So we end up going out again and I went this time. We drove around town a bit but couldn't hear anything besides normal tire noise. Then I had him get on the highway with it. Still didn't really hear it. It seemed pretty odd that a noise that has been plain as day to hear all of a sudden disappears. I don't know what they might have done if anything but it wasn't doing it of course. I didn't want to sit there and argue with them anymore so I decided to leave. All the way home I listened and didn't hear a peep. I drop my uncle off and start to go up the street and the noise starts plain as day again. Totally mind boggling! I guess I'm going to have to figure out what is wrong myself because nothing ever seems to get fixed at the dealership. Let us know what they come up with on yours. What else are they doing with yours?

GM used to have whining problems with their power steering pumps. As these trucks have electric power steering, they do not have the pump anymore, so that variable is out.

I won't have it back until I return on the 26th. I dropped it off on way out of town and will pick it up when I return. I'd be interested in seeing what they say.

But before I left I drove around for almost 2 hours running errands and it was almost non existant by the end of my drive.

I wonder if that was your issue. If you drove 40 miles to get to the dealer, we're your tires warm by the time it got there?

That wouldn't explain why it came back by the time you got home. Seems like something else is going on there.

It was below zero on the way over to the dealer but it had warmed up to around 10 on the way home. But yeah that doesn't really explain why it started again once I got home. Seemed like it started right after I stopped and put it in park and then put it back in gear and drove it up the road from dropping my uncle off. Maybe it is something transmission related and shifting it in and out of gear is doing something. Maybe there is air in the system. I'm just guessing at this point and shifting it into different gears does something to it.

Let us know if they find something. Of course it can be either the transmission or the transfer case. I remember some years ago we had a Dodge Stratus for one of our office cars and its transmission (actually transaxle) whined constantly at all speeds. Of course this being a company car, nobody cared and the problem was never fixed. Other than the whining, the car was quite reliable.

I also remember a mid 1990s Dodge 2500 passenger full size van with a 4 speed automatic transmission. if you floored the van while doing say 50 MPH to pass something, it would downshift into third gear, but then would hunt between third and fourth constantly until you let up on the gas. it was a very strange issue and definitely a safety issue in a passing situation. You could not get past 12 MPG out of this 318 V8 no matter how carefully you drove it, even if the vehicle was empty except for the driver.

Our company GM cars such as Malibus, Impalas, full size vans, and Silverados have been the quietest and most reliable. We have not had a Silverado newer than 2013 yet, so maybe this is why. No vibration or other problems with any of the GM cars or trucks. Our F350 crew cab gassers have been good trucks too.

On mine I do notice once it shifts into 5th I don't hear it as much if any. I'm thinking either trams or rear

I know you haven't picked yours back up yet but did you happen to hear any news?

No, no news. Per on star, they put like 45 miles one it. But I'm currently out of the country, so I haven't called. I'll call in the morning to remind them I'm coming in Friday.

    • Hi friends - first time poster. I have a 2015 sierra Denali with 150k miles, I’m the second owner and she’s given me 75k of great service. I run a pulse AFM disable device. Starting Thursday when I exited the freeway after a short local ride it started idling rough, with an obvious misfire shake and was down on low end power.  I got it home and hooked it up to my scannner and found no codes but in live data a pretty bad misfire on cylinder 5. I replaced the coil, plug and wire with all new OE replacements (Delphi gn10165 coil, acdelco wire and 41-168 plug). It’s still behaving the same way after firing the parts cannon at it.   I know cyl 5 is a non AFM cylinder so I am not thinking this is AFM related but I’m kinda at a loss. injector? Bent pushrod? It’s running too well over 1k rpm to suggest those IMO. Has anyone chase this issue before and what was it? Any suggestions?
    • 2017 Silverado L83 5.3l 6speed transmission Hello, not a new member but havent posted in a while and my old signup info isnt working so had to create a new account. anyways, I have an issue with my truck and hope someone can spread some light on whats happening: -when it goes to 4cyl mode it makes a clunk sound (but not when coasting or going downhill) -when in 4 cyl mode and under load it makes a load pulsating sound (not a tick). -goes away completely when in M5 gear or when plugging in an AFM delete. Im guessing it is one of 2 things but im not convinced of either to be honest. 1. lifter stuck in v8 mode 2. torque converter shudder realistically it doesn't seem like the TC as there is no physical vibration , and it never happens in v8 mode. but maybe? and wouldnt a lifter make a sound whether with load or not? any ideas let me know please. thank you!
    • Which has made me wonder with the various engine failures of a few brands in the last few years, is it sub par materials such as lifters etc causing failures, or bearing clearances on the crank etc or perhaps bad designing of an engine physically or causing too much load on the components due to the hp/torque they can push out of them. Or is the oil viscosity and additive package of current oils or a lack of oil flow by an oil pump not able to supply sufficient oil at idle or under high load at low rpm. Or is it every item I listed that combined together has pushed the limits so far to the left that there is hardly a margin of safety left and add in some fuel dilution and too long of an OCI and premature engine failure is the result ?.
    • He is not saying that an SAE *W20 will have more viscosity than a *W40 due to MORE VII polymers. He is saying that although multiple *W40 may post in the PDS the same or similar 100 C and 150 C viscosities that the blenders choice of modifier TYPE and AMOUNT to get his chosen base to grade will not give identical real world viscosities in shear and at temperature. All will pass the SII test but not all will pass the 100 C HTHS (unpublished value) testing the blender does and relies on to get the required by law "percentage improvement' referenced to his last great work.    Tis the problem with the lie. Once told others are required to support it.
    • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.
