2016 whine noise

I know you haven't picked yours back up yet but did you happen to hear any news?

Soooo...you ready for this.

They said they could hear it. I told them to drive it again and left it another day.

I told them their techs were incompetent and they hear about in the survey. That I'll start going to a different dealership.

I was pissed. I left the truck for two with with 4 issues. And all they did was balance my tires. I didn't even need my tires balance. They were smooth.

I know have a wheel balancing vibration that they caused by balancing tires that didn't need it.

On a lighter note. The temps were 46 today, which is pretty warm. And the sound of the whine was so minimal.

It's supposed to be 60 tomorrow. I'll drive it again and it verify.

Pretty sure it's the crappy tires.

You got the same run around bs sounds like. I don't understand what is wrong with these dealers. They admit they hear something and instead of working on it more to figure out the route cause they just half ass things and send you on your way. Such a joke really. Then When you get pissed they have to say well this guy has 30 years experience doing this blah blah blah. If he's got that much experience then fix it. You don't have to be a genius to think logically and eliminate what could be the problem. I'd ask them to try a set of wheels from a different truck to see if it still does it. I haven't really heard the noise from mine lately. I've been listening on and off and I can't seem to hear it.

Have the temps been higher.

It's been 65 here the last two days and the the whine is almost gone.

It's there because I'm listening for it. But but not as bad as it was when it was 19 degrees.

I think at this point, I'm going to hold out until the summer and see if it's completely gone.

Kind of surprised there aren't more people with the Wrangler SRA'S ate complaining about tire noise.

Well here is a update on my 2016 SLT/Z71 5.3L / 8-speed.

I took it back to the dealer for the 2nd time for the whining sound (35 mph) that they agreed was a abnormal sound but GM didn't want to do any thing at this visit because the truck only had about 2,000 mile on it. Dealer told me to bring it back if it gets worse. Well it never got worse but it never got better either.

On this visit they switch tires out but still had noise. GM technical service instructed the dealer to inspect the rear differential, Nothing was found so GM told them to replace the completed rear differential with a new one.

I'm hoping this will take care of it. I'm just happy the dealer and GM are willing to work on the problem rather then tell me it normal.

Here is a update. The new rear diff is going in today. Service Adviser told me the tech is going to stay until its in. They will test drive tomorrow and give me a call after the test drive. Hoping for good news!!

Hopefully that fixes the problem. I have not really heard anything from mine lately.

Well all fixed!!! no more noise. Not sure what component of the rear diff that was causing the the noise but replacing the completed rear diff asm took care of the problem. I'm very happy its like a new truck!!

I took mine to a different dealer and the temps were 75.

The noise was so quiet, I was kind of embarrassed mentioning it.

We drove it and hear it speed up and slow down, although faintly.

Put the truck in neutral and took foot off the Gas removing all load from the drive train and the noise albeit low was still there changing with speed.

They said it's just the tires and by this summer I won't notice it.

Sounds very similar to my issue. I bought a new 2016 gmc sierra in may 2016. 5.3 8 speed trans. In November I started to hear a whinning- moaning sound coming from right in front of me it sounds. It has a rhythm to it where it does it every 5-6 seconds. Can only hear it at 55-68 ish mph. It doesn't do it every time but most of the time. I did try a trick today that I read on this post. When I turn 4 wheel drive knob to Auto it stopped... And it didn't start again when I went back. I had it with dealer for a week and they didn't hear it. And when I took them for a drive it didn't do it. But as soon as I got back home it started again. Driving me crazy!!! I'm going to take back to dealer ASAP and hope it does it so they can know what im talking about. Has anyone found an answer for this??? I'm shocked that there isn't a bulletin out of some kind! Thanks

Well, this is puzzling, hopefully someone can help me here too. I jsut bought my 2017 Sierra. It has 250 miles on it now. There is this whine, if you open the back window you can hear it better, that seems to come and go. When you are driving along at "highway" speeds suddenly itll be there, and will be there until you stop completely. If you are driving at city speed and slow down (or use the brakes at all) itll suddenly start and stay, speeding up or slowing down, but as soon as you stop itll be gone for a little while.

Its too intermittent to be tires (I think) and I would expect a diff to do it constantly. New brakes maybe? Its super weird that it comes and goes (after you stop).

The sound reminds me of a honda backing up, but its definitely behind the cab, and you can really hear it if you open the back window.

Thoughts?

I have the same problem. Just bought a new 2017 Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L V8. Noticed a high speed "whine" or "whirring" sound that comes on right at 60 mph and increases with acceleration up thru 75-80 mph. I noticed it because it can get so loud it drowns out my radio. I have 1200 miles on the vehicle, so took it to the local Dealer and told them to check it out. Initially, I got the run around, and their "head mechanic" said it was normal and there was nothing to be done. BS. I used to work as a mechanic and I know a unusual drive-line noise when I hear one. I made the journey back to the Dealer and told them to come for a ride. The first mechanic would not give me the time of day, so the Service Advisor pulled another mechanic and we went for a ride. He definitely heard the issue and said, "oh...thats not normal at all, probably a differential that was not shimmed properly". Back to the dealer, wrote up the ticket and was told to come back on Monday and they would have it addressed.

So, Monday comes and I get a phone call from the Service Advisor saying they weren't going to do anything about it, it was normal for that vehicle, blah...blah...blah. I was furious! I made another trip to the Dealer and went immediately to the Service Manager and told him the story. He pulls another (third) mechanic, this one was an older gent that seemed to be knowledgeable and willing to help me out. Again, went for a ride, first I drove, then he drove. He DEFINITELY heard the noise and admitted I have a whining issue in the drive-line that is not normal. OK...so I not have TWO mechanics that agree with me! I am not crazy! The Service Manager was more than nice and said they would tackle the problem. We put the truck up on the high-lift and with a guy in the front seat, ran the vehicle at speed while listening with a stethoscope, all thru the drive line. It was not the same noise without being loaded, but you could still hear it. Very hard to locate, sounded like it was coming from the drive shaft. However, I think it was the rear differential, and the noise was transferring up the drive shaft and thats where it was echoing. Regardless, the mechanic thinks the drive shaft might be out of balance and they have ordered me a new one. Supposed to be here on Monday.

I honestly don't think its the drive shaft and told them so. I believe the first mechanic was correct, that its the differential.

We will see. I will add posts on here as I get results.

I do see a lot of posts on here about tire noise. This is definitely NOT tire noise. I ruled that out right away, by driving over different surfaces, (concrete, asphalt, etc) and the noise does not change in anyway. If it was tire noise it would.

This is definitely a drive-line whining problem coming from the rear-end or the transmission.

To be continued....

Ok, so after waiting a week and ahalf, they have replaced my drive shaft, and said the vehicle was fixed, come pick it up. I picked it up that afternoon and NOPE, its not fixed!

Its just as bad as ever. So, now I am getting the run around with the mechanic saying this is "normal", blah, blah, blah. Ahhhh....TWO of your mechanics confirmed the noise issue was not normal, so now they are saying it is?? I don't think so! This is pure Dealership BS. They just don't want to fix it.

I am tired of having to grind my issue with a Dealership that is not willing to fix this problem, and leave me out in the cold with a problem vehicle that cost me major bucks!

I am going to shop around and trade this POS off as soon as I can. For anyone thats considering buying one of the new 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500s....Buyer BEWARE!

Do youself a big favor, take a second look at that Tundra or that Ford.

Unhappy Chevy Silverado owner.

So, I took my truck in with 400 miles on the clock and they kept it a few days, and definitely heard the noise. So, they called GM, who then didnt call them back. Well I went to the dealership and pitched a fit. The GM went to the Service Manager, who then called me an hour later saying that his head mechanic stuck him in the truck and put him in the air. They confirmed it was something in the transfer case. So when he called me, I asked if they could just replace the case. They had to go with GMs solution first which was to replace 2 bearings. Well 3 business days later I got a call saying the bearings came in and it didnt fix the issue. So, he used some kind of override and just ordered a new tcase. 2 more business days it came in, they swapped it, and I had my truck back a few hours later. Hasnt done it again yet and I am at 1700 miles on the clock. Hoping it doesnt happen again, and that it was just a defective tcase from the factory. Fingers crossed.

So, anyone that has had a strange while like mine, it could be the tcase.

Chris, Interesting for sure. That sounds like my issue, the noise is definitely coming from either the Tranny or the Differential. I suspect the Diff, but it could be in the transfer case. Now that you mention that fixed your problem, its probably what I am experiencing also. Problem is, how do I get them to address the issue? I guess I have some more ammo to go battle this one now. I just hate having to do this. They should be more than willing to fix the problem on their end. Forcing them to fix it sure leaves a sour taste in my mouth about Chevy. Does anyone know where these Transfer Cases are built? Might have something to do with it.

Well i keep telling the dealership it has something to do with the temp outside. Mine was really bad until april and it started going away. I havent heard it whine all summer. Yesterday we had a cooler night and i heard it again. I bet anything that my noise come back as soon as it starts cooling off. I have 26000 miles now. THIS noise is never going away until someone cares enough to fix it. I have even recorded the noise and its plain as day! It seems like since temp has something to do with it that it might be a liquid thats too thick...but no idea! Swithing it to auto 4 wheel drive makes it go away.
