EaZ8 Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 anyone else having issues with the voltas? i checked my forum posts and looks like i got them put in april 29th/2015, had 1 blow out just before christmas (8 months and 15,000km or so) they replaced it under warranty but now the other 1 just blew out a few min ago. ya they warrantied it but its such a pain. ive never had headlights blow out this fast.
GMCSierra4x4 Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 Interestingly, GM provided a body module reprogramming and replacement bulbs to fix the problem with light output complaints. I was not provided with any information on the replacement bulb or a modification to my vehicle (sticker information) reflecting the new bulb type (9012). I suspect we will all be dealing with this issue in the future because I cannot find any proof that the new bulbs were designed for 14 volts vice 12 volts. During the upgrade, the BCM was reflashed to change the supplied voltage to 14 volts.
EaZ8 Posted March 3, 2016 Author Posted March 3, 2016 i think im going to be just putting my HID kit in as soon as the weather warms up. even the upgraded bulbs suck, then lets add in them costing something like $60 each and only lasting 10,000km
POS VETT Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 anyone else having issues with the voltas? i checked my forum posts and looks like i got them put in april 29th/2015, had 1 blow out just before christmas (8 months and 15,000km or so) they replaced it under warranty but now the other 1 just blew out a few min ago. ya they warrantied it but its such a pain. ive never had headlights blow out this fast. Is the DRL on your truck still functioning?
oneandzero Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 These bulbs are rated for 12v so raising the voltage to 14v will greatly reduce bulb life. Good job GM.. kick us out the door with a phony upgrade that's gonna cost us a fortune replacing bulbs. Its becoming clear GM learnt nothing from 2008.
Ventilator Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 I just had a Vosla burn out a couple nights ago. Replaced under warranty, and was curious what they cost. I know some of those European headlights have to be replaced in pairs or the old bulb will burn out quick because of the new bulb. Not going to like that, if they are indeed $60. That's like another kick in the nutz from GM. The kick that keeps on giving! Had 3 other bulbs burn out last week to. RR turn/tail, and both license plate lights. All replaced under warranty but, I'm at 30 months and 30,800 miles. Pretty soon it's going to be my dime!
Panik Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 It looks like it might not just be the Volsa's that are having problems. After the BCM upgrade I dropped in a set of modded 65w phillips about 6-8 months ago and both of them blew last week within roughly 2 days of each other. At least the phiilips are relatively inexpensive going through home depot's website.
EaZ8 Posted March 4, 2016 Author Posted March 4, 2016 so this BCM upgrade was a bad move by the sound of it. they are pumping too much voltage to the bulbs and its just going to be a lifetime of this issue. i wonder if they are able to revert the software but keep the volta bulbs. Edit - i have my dealer looking into what my options are. ide be fine with them going back to standard 12 volts at this point. oh hell, they can put in the 2016 software and give me a headlight housing and bulb swap
fondupot Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 they can put in the 2016 software and give me a headlight housing and bulb swap They'll sell you a new truck before they would even think of putting 2016 hardware on a older model.
EaZ8 Posted March 4, 2016 Author Posted March 4, 2016 They'll sell you a new truck before they would even think of putting 2016 hardware on a older model. i know i was kidding, with the exception that GM has acknowledged a issue with the headlights by issuing this service bulletin, and now that there is a completely different bulb type for 2016 its not that far fetched to think they would put in 2016 software and the 2016 LED bulbs...i believe i read they switched to LED's
Shredzy Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Here's proof that the '14-'15 Sierra's can be fitted with the 2016 lights with a plug-n-play kit, for a price of around $1400. GM could do it for much less I'm sure. http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/183823-first-2014-sierra-with-2016-leds/page-1 The Vosla bulbs only have a rated lifespan of around 250 hours(maybe) and the Phillips are rated at 1400. I had the Voslas swapped back out for the Phillips, I didn't notice an improvement of lighting with the Voslas and went back to the Phillips for longevity until a real solution.

But these are the HID version of the 2016 headlights, NOT the LED version. The HID version is probably a lot easy to swap over than the LED.

WLC Posted October 2, 2016 Posted October 2, 2016 Had my trucks in twice due to GM's request for headlight performance. Dealer said nothing more they can do. PM GM and said its time for them to step up and make some sort of offer. No replies yet!

Due to deer rut coming soon I changed all my lights to LEDs and added aux lights so I could see. All on my dime.
