Going to look at a 07 max this weekend. Ext cab leather etc has 145k on it asking around 12 which I think is high. Rust free one elder owner. Could I expect this truck to be reliable for years to come? Also do you recommend getting tune to shut afm off? How is the max stock for power and what simple mods can I do to increase hp even more?

I just got rid of my 08 vmax in February. I had no real problems with mine. I'd recommend a Blackbear tune to wake the powertrain up a bit.

Depending on the body, both 6.0's were stong. A tune helps a lot. Not sure i would pay 12 for a 9 year old truck

The asking price seems a little high. With that mileage, if there were an AFM issue with oil usage on the truck it would have turned up by now. Getting a good tune and disabling AFM is the best thing for the L76 Vortec Max. Mine has been great since day 1.

Did the max 6.0 have AFM?

Ryan

The GMT900 version did. Rich had a 6.0 with AFM.

One piece of advice from experience, I looked at one virtually identical and it was perfect....until I decided to run it hard just to see how it felt because I had made up my mind and was about to hand him the cash. Anyway, it was perfect while cruising along easily but under load the transmission started jumping around and slipping and really acting up, I'm so glad I have a heavy foot, it actually paid off for once! It wasn't any safety mode or AFM issue, it was slipping and had internal issues. That's probably very rare but I just wanted to share that. That being said, I think the price is high as others do.and would have to make a lower offer after checking it out in person. When you whip out $9000 or even $10,000 in Cash it will make a difference, even if he counters with $10,500 or so it's better than the asking price. Try $9000 in $100 Bills and see what happens, unless he's hardcore and doesn't care if he sells it or not I'm sure he'll let you have it for less, you know how it goes, he's probably pricing it high in anticipation of that so he can get what he thinks it's worth but as pointed out before it's nearly a decade old and if you drive very much it'll have 200,000 miles on it before you know it. Honestly, I just had to have a 1/2 Ton with a 6.0 and was looking at VMAX Trucks, the Denali Trucks, 1500HD, abd the Silverado SS. I ended up buying a gorgeous 1 Owner 2003 AS All Wheel Drive Truck with 81,000 miles for $14,000 Cash from a Doctor who didn't care if he sold it or not and wouldn't take a penny less. I kept it and enjoyed it for a while but then felt like I shouldn't have spent so much so I sold it and got my 99 GMC Sierra Extended Cab Z71.5.3 and honestly I know on paper it's a considerable power difference but a healthy 5.3 feels plenty powerful so I sold the SS and luckily got my $14,000 back and bought a clean older model truck but you can hardly tell the difference between it and an 96 or 07. I had previously had a 06 GMC 2500HD with the Duramax and after owning both there's not much difference in looks, and if you get a nice, considerably cheaper 1509 with a 5.3 you can spend a little bit of the money you saved on a set of Long Tubes and get a reasonable exhaust shop to connect them to your existing exhaust or if you buy the matching y pipe it'll cost about the same as having them connect the headers to your existing exhaust, get a moderately priced intake for $200 or less and a custom tune then you'll have more power than the VMAX and if you want to you can put a VortecMaxx Badge on it and it can be your own version, I personally think they're nice but over-rated, don't let me offend you or anyone else or get me wrong because I'd buy one at the right price but a well tuned 5.3 with the stuff I listed feels every bit as powerful and honestly I think more in some cases. Drive a few and one will run better than the rest and after a few modifications it'll.be just as well. But if money is no issue, and I believe it's definitely a factor here, you may give that a try because I don't think there's much worse than buying something only to realize you paid too much after a short while, especially if you're not paying cash and making a payment monthly for it. You can find a nice crew cab Duramax or basically anything you want within reason for $12,000. I just missed out on a beautiful crew cab 2599HD with a Duramax for under $8000, I couldn't believe it and wouldn't but seen proof and it's exceptionally nice, sure it's got about 223,000 miles but as we know that's not going to make much difference on that truck with its Powertrain Combination, just an example. After owning many nice vehicles and Serious High Performance Cars like a newer Cobra and a first gen Z06 when they were the best for the money I honestly prefer older stuff that looks modern with the same basic features, like my last 98 Camaro AS that was a 98 Model, after a little work it was no Z06 of course, but very fast and very close, definitely close enough. I'm not trying to discourage you, I'm always thinking like a poor person even if I have plenty of money, I grew up that way and I bought everything I ever wanted when I was grown after college but found out it's not all that like I thought it would be, and even if you're making plenty of money $700+ Truck Payments suck, I know that's not the case here but I ended up paying big payments for years, now ic I can't pay cash or trade plus cash I keep saving and keep looking into I finally find one I'm comfortable with. Didn't mean to get off subject but you may check out a few 5.3's, the new body style trucks with a 5.3 would embarrass the 03 SS I had or run right with it on a bad day, drive a tuned one with the usual long tube headers, intake, etc and compare them then see what you think. Just my opinion from my personal experiences, hopefully it can be of use to you or someone who stumbles upon this later. Good Luck and I hope you're extremely happy with whatever you get, that's the honest truth!
