Not as much plastic as I thought

I thought that my 15 Denali came with an aluminum hood, so I was checking it with a magnet and it didn't stick, so it must be aluminum.

But as I was checking near the front edge of the hood, the magnet stuck to the chrome grill surround. Then I tried the chrome surrounding the front tow hooks and the magnet stuck there too.

No problem, I just thought for sure that those parts would be plastic.

The grille surround was probably getting the bracket behind. I'm pretty sure those are just coated plastic.

That's what I thought, except the magnet was sticking across the whole thing and down the sides.

The magnet is just a weak refrigerator magnet from Hemmings -the thin vinyl ones.

Maybe someone has cut or damaged one and would know?

Well maybe there is enough metal in the chrome parts that make it attract the magnet just enough.

I have a big nasty chip in my AT grille and it is definitely plastic. The stock chrome grille that the truck came with also had a nasty chip on it and it is also definitely plastic.

Could be the vapor deposition coating of microfine particles over the plastic is not chromium or aluminum, but a magnetic steel alloy.

It's probably one of these -it just caught me off guard that the magnet would stick.
