My 95 305 tbi is having a problem i believe is timing related. The timing changes to give you more power kinda like a vtec thing is the best way i can describe it. When the engine is under alot of load or im full throttle sometimes it will deside to change the timing and you can feel the power increase when it does it. Only problem is when i get that power increase i believe the engine starts to spark knock. I can hear pinging that goes up with the rpms until the knock sensor hears it and turns the timing way down and gives a check engine light.

My question is what should i do with the timing? I currently dont have a timing light. So could it be my timing has to much retard in? Ir maybe to much advance? I dont really know so any info on how this stuff works is greatly appreciated.

May be just a bad tank of gas. Has it always done this or has it become an issue since you purchased. I'd take it somewhere that can do a proper scan for codes and ensure the timing is within spec.

Definitely not bad gas. It tosses code 43 witch is timing related code.

Ill try and explain better.

Say im crusin on the highway at 65 and want to go to 75. So i give it a tad more throttle to accelerate. My foot is still im just waiting to get up to speed. Foot completely still it will get a little boost of power and a split second later start a pinging for 1 or 2 seconds getting faster as the rpms go up. Then i lose power and code comes on. All while not moving my foot the whole time.

So basiclly i know its the computer is changing the timing to give more power. I just dont know if its advancing or retarding it.

how do i adjust the timing

Whats a good base timing to be at?

Im still new to stuff like this so any help is appreciated

What grade of gasoline are you using? If 87 octane try a higher octane and see what happens. Make sure the tank has a high percentage of the higher octane and not an even mixture of both. You don't have to fill it up. Just enough to have a good sample.

Ive tried them all 87 89 91 a full tank of each. I will say the 91 does it less but its barely noticeable.

Your knock sensor is bad. I had this exact problem to a tee back a few years ago in an old 1990 GMC I used to own. Pinging, then CEL when trying to get a bit extra power. Code 43 every time. Change the sensor and it'll fix it. $40 for a good ACDelco one on Rockauto.
