Delayed Engagement on the 8L90E

Lol. Mine are paid for the day I pick them up... who cares lol. I have dumped problematic pieces of junk.. like my prior 14 month old F150... and move on. It's a lot simpler than having your truck sit at a dealer for weeks or months. But mine make money too... so I look at it differently. Have fun driving your never ending rentals! I will in the meantime enjoy my truck until it bores me and I buy another one.

Parts are here taking it in Monday they said the first one they did went well no delay what so ever and the shuttering is gone the only thing is the shifting is more firm And that the guy was completely pleased with it so we will see how mine turns out

Taking my truck in this morning for the exact same issue. Seems like the clunking is getting worse as the truck gets more miles put on her. Hopefully my dealership will fix it as they did yours!

Well it's been done and it's a lot better no more delayed engagement or falling on it face while shifting some shifts are a lot more firm just depending on the conditions every now and them the initial shift into drive wil lunge hard but no delay it is not perfect but it's a lot better then it was it was well worth getting it done

Mine is currently in the shop with the delayed engagement issue. If the truck has sat for more than a few hours, it's a guarantee that during the initial shift from Park to Drive, it delays a couple seconds, and then BAM--it's hard into first. Have to have foot on brake very firmly; otherwise, truck is sailing forward a foot or two. The delayed engagement from Park to Drive is literally that harsh.

I took mine in finally... And now I have more miles on since the stator change. It really didn't do a hell of a lot of anything. It still clunks, shifts rough and lags shifting from park. So... I will just drive it now. The 16s still do this too so it's not like a new transmission will fix anything.

I just dropped off my '15 Sierra at the dealership this morning. It was only there for a couple hours. I was already gone and uploading videos to send to them showing it acting up in case it didn't for them personally. As I was typing the email with links they called me and stated that it acted up on them so they confirmed the clunk when shifting into gear. I had printed this TSB for them before I went in this morning and they said it did apply to me when they just called. They also said that it had "excessive play in the gears." As a result no work is being done on the 41k mile transmission. They are just yanking it out and completely replacing it. I only tried once before to show them while it was in for service on something unrelated. I had got the "it's normal" response that time. I've had this happening since day 1 of ownership but never really pressed the issue until I found this TSB so thank you very much for getting the ball rolling for me. I figured that armed with this TSB and videos proving what was happening that I was bound to get something done....just wasn't expecting it to be a completely new transmission lol.

Side note: I have a '16 Sierra SLE extended cab w/5.3L 6-speed as a loaner. The transmission in this one is WAY more "confident" with what it's doing and doesn't clunk or anything. It was immediately noticeable. Granted I'm comparing apples & oranges so it should be interesting to see what the new 8-speed feels like. Makes me nervous right now though that some new issues will be there after the work is complete.

I just feel great that I've been validated by the dealership finally as I've been saying since the day I bought it that something just wasn't right in the transmission.

Anyone hear of the few 17's out there if this is still happening. I'm thinking of trading off my 15 for one.

According to the TSB, 8-spd trucks "shouldn't" have the delayed engagement issue if the build date is after 10/12/2015.

I have read that too so its interesting if it changes for trucks after or not. Maybe I should go bitch for a new transmission if that's the case as the stator swap literally did absolutely nothing for my truck. It was better and after a few miles back to the same thing as before.

Mine is still in the shop, unfortunately. Am not bothering my service advisor too much because I know he and tech are at the mercy of GM when it comes to drivetrain repairs. Mine is a May 2015 build so am hoping for the best. :fingersx:

Well mine is acting up again would hardly back out of the driveway yesterday without revving to 3k rpm and slow to engage to drive this thing is junk do t know when I can get to the dealer might just let it burn up then they will have to replace it again

    • Hi friends - first time poster. I have a 2015 sierra Denali with 150k miles, I’m the second owner and she’s given me 75k of great service. I run a pulse AFM disable device. Starting Thursday when I exited the freeway after a short local ride it started idling rough, with an obvious misfire shake and was down on low end power.  I got it home and hooked it up to my scannner and found no codes but in live data a pretty bad misfire on cylinder 5. I replaced the coil, plug and wire with all new OE replacements (Delphi gn10165 coil, acdelco wire and 41-168 plug). It’s still behaving the same way after firing the parts cannon at it.   I know cyl 5 is a non AFM cylinder so I am not thinking this is AFM related but I’m kinda at a loss. injector? Bent pushrod? It’s running too well over 1k rpm to suggest those IMO. Has anyone chase this issue before and what was it? Any suggestions?
    • 2017 Silverado L83 5.3l 6speed transmission Hello, not a new member but havent posted in a while and my old signup info isnt working so had to create a new account. anyways, I have an issue with my truck and hope someone can spread some light on whats happening: -when it goes to 4cyl mode it makes a clunk sound (but not when coasting or going downhill) -when in 4 cyl mode and under load it makes a load pulsating sound (not a tick). -goes away completely when in M5 gear or when plugging in an AFM delete. Im guessing it is one of 2 things but im not convinced of either to be honest. 1. lifter stuck in v8 mode 2. torque converter shudder realistically it doesn't seem like the TC as there is no physical vibration , and it never happens in v8 mode. but maybe? and wouldnt a lifter make a sound whether with load or not? any ideas let me know please. thank you!
    • Which has made me wonder with the various engine failures of a few brands in the last few years, is it sub par materials such as lifters etc causing failures, or bearing clearances on the crank etc or perhaps bad designing of an engine physically or causing too much load on the components due to the hp/torque they can push out of them. Or is the oil viscosity and additive package of current oils or a lack of oil flow by an oil pump not able to supply sufficient oil at idle or under high load at low rpm. Or is it every item I listed that combined together has pushed the limits so far to the left that there is hardly a margin of safety left and add in some fuel dilution and too long of an OCI and premature engine failure is the result ?.
    • He is not saying that an SAE *W20 will have more viscosity than a *W40 due to MORE VII polymers. He is saying that although multiple *W40 may post in the PDS the same or similar 100 C and 150 C viscosities that the blenders choice of modifier TYPE and AMOUNT to get his chosen base to grade will not give identical real world viscosities in shear and at temperature. All will pass the SII test but not all will pass the 100 C HTHS (unpublished value) testing the blender does and relies on to get the required by law "percentage improvement' referenced to his last great work.    Tis the problem with the lie. Once told others are required to support it.
    • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.
