Disabling Onstar

Recommended Posts

Hi All. I bought a 2016 silverado about five months ago. Once every 30d after I start my truck, I'm met with a 1 - 2 minute advertisement for onstar. This is annoying the shit out of me. It's embarrassing when I have others riding with me.

I've tried talking to them by hitting the blue button. They said it would be turned off, but it still comes back a month later. Has anyone located the box in our trucks? I've read it is not as straight forward as pulling a fuse.

It will eventually stop. They just try to hook you within the first few months of your purchase.

Can't do anything to disable it. The module is integrated with other components and cannot be simply removed.

I had to call them (phone, not via onstar) and have the issue escalated to their level 2 supt, seemed stupid to me that it had to go a higher level, but that was what I was told. I got a call back a day or two later, said they disabled it and been fine since. That was almost two years ago.

I had to do this as well.

I had to call them and tell them I no longer agreed to their terms and conditions and they disabled the hardware remotely. When the green light on the mirror turns to red it is really disabled.

You will not be able to contact onstar from the truck after you do it and you will lose the 'free' remote onstar capability to start and unlock your car for 5 years as well.

I tried to get the advertisements to stop and thats the only way they would do it, if they can get them to stop and keep the hardware active that would be great. I'll find out when the trial expires and they start with the advertisements..

They can stop it, just a matter of getting someone who care to do it. Took me about 3 tries before they finally got mine to stop as well.

This is not true. When I had my 2014's system upgraded to accommodate 4G / wifi hotspot these annoying Onstar messages started after the free trial expired. I called onstar, had a few choice words for them, and after 3 calls they disabled the message and all my basic onstar functions still work including the remote app.

And btw, in case anyone is wondering, if you are in an accident and require 911, they must patch it through by law, activated or not. It is a requirement of all cellular telephone communications. That's something OnStar does not advertise for obvious reasons (it makes their Safe and Sound subscription basically worthless).

Good to know, the trial onstar in my C7 will be expiring in a couple months and I'll see what happens when the adverts start. I can really care less about Onstar but I didnt like losing the ability to unlock the truck with the app on the phone, but thats what they did to stop the adverts on my old '15.
