Leaf spring " slap" clanking noise fix

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to share my cheap fix for this........ I used rubber garden hose o rings, it's all I had, but cut a slit in them and pulled the rubber pads up on the overload spring, there's room under them without out pulling them out and slide the o ring around the "stem" of the pad. It works as a spacer under bottom of the leaf spring pad and raises them up to make more contact before metal on metal happens. Just got sick of travel 25 mph down a residential road with the window down and a brand new truck clanking away. Gm should come out with a little thicker of a pad and it would solve this problem.

I had a little clanking and all I did to fix it was to TQ down the u-bolt nuts. A lot of people have done this and fixed the issue. You should check the TQ specs on yours just in case your fix is just insulating the noise and not the actual fix.

I actually have 3" ready lift blocks so I have them torqued to spec. So that was definitely not my problem. Mine was caused by the bottom leaf also known as the overload spring slapping the others over bumps cracks in concrete.

Can you post a picture of what you did? I am having a hard time imagining it.

I would just re-torque the leaf spring bolts, that is all that it took me to get mine quiet.

People I already torqued my leaf spring bolts as stated above it did not cure my issue with the leafs slapping I believe I'm at 89ft lbs...... I will post a pic soon.....

Sorry not good pics but the rubber pad on bottom leaf, pull up a little on the pad and then install it under the silencer pad... It works. I didn't want to take the pad out and try and get it back in so I just sliced an o ring so you can slip it around the I call it a "stem" of the silencer pad, the part that inserts into a hole in the leaf spring and acts like a spacer to raise the silencer pad. If you look closely at the pic you can see a space between the silencer pad and the leaf now. Hope this helps.... I've been driving around for a couple of weeks noise free now...thank god

Finally go around to doing this on the two rear pads on both leafs. Didn't change anything for me.
