Paint peeling around rear cab third brake light.

Finally got around to washing and waxing my truck the other day and saw something new! Paint chipping away in the crease around the top right side of the third brake light. I know some on here have had paint chipping problems on the doors but anybody have it around the cab brake light? Guess I'll be putting my warranty to work again.

I am sure that GM will tell you that their vehicle painting process is up to world class standards. Yes, third world class standards.

I knew about the paint issue around the lower sections of some trucks but haven't seen a post with it coming off around the cab brake light. Guess we will see what GM will do about it when I get time to take it in.

I have the same issue on my 2015 Victory Red Silverado, it started as just little nicks in the corners and has since spread around the corners. I took it to the local dealer and they just gave me the run around but agreed that it was an issue.

They gave you the run around over paint chipping off of a new truck!!! I would have blown my top with that dealership. You need to go back in there and demand they fix it and threaten legal action.

I have gone to that dealer 4 times with no resolution and have contacted GM customer care multiple times. I finally contacted another dealer that customer care had suggested and they are finding resolution to this matter. The body shop manager thinks when they assembled the truck they nicked the brake light off the cab and this is the result over time. He did warn me that with the water based paint if you get a void in the clear coat that it is only a matter of time until the color starts flaking away and is down hill from there such as what is seen around the third brake light.

Also he said they would be performing the "tape test" on different areas of my truck to check the quality and durability of the paint as I have other issues than just the chipping around the third brake light.

That's why as soon as I get a scratch or chip in pair I touch it up. I bought my touch up paint from GMC dealer. It has the paint on one end, and clear coat on other end.

Sure, touching up the paint on a properly painted vehicle is the right thing to do and I am sure most owners do that. On the other hand, trying to touch up dime sized spots left by peeling paint is a true "Polish the turd" endeavor.

I had this issue on my truck as soon as i bought it. The first wash i noticed a chip above the light on the right hand side. It appears to have been done upon installation of the third brake light itself. Dealership repaired it under warranty for me with no issues.

Not to bring back a dead thread but I do have an update in regards to my paint issues. After having the body shop at the new dealer inspect the truck they made an appointment to have the back of the cab repainted and the other spots taken care of. After a week in the shop I got my truck back to find the brake light chipping was resolved due to repainting the cab, the other nicks and blemishes appear to just have touch up paint applied, and the "pimples" I had in the tailgate had a 3 stage buff, polish, and wax done. Now about 2 months after this fix I have chipping AGAIN around the 3rd brake light! I can't believe it has returned yet again! I have also found 2 more spots in the paint that appear to be debris that was in the paint when it was painted. I contacted the dealer I purchased the truck from and they advised they would like for me to come in and they will evaluate the truck and see if we can find resolution to this matter outside of Lemon Law. I also contacted the dealer that performed paint fixes and they advised I would need to bring the truck back for evaluation also. At this time I am just going to go to the selling dealer tomorrow and see what they have to say.

I to have this problem and ive looked at a few other trucks that have it also. If you look at the gaps around the light on the left side there is a slight gap maybe 1/16 of an inch and on the right side at the corner it is tight . i already have slight rust showing where the paint is rubbed through. I tried touching it up but it keeps coming off. something is slightly misaligned

Hello tnchevy,

I certainly understand how this peeling paint concern can be frustrating. Feel free to send us a private message including your VIN and contact information, if you need an additional layer of support.

I was looking to replace my cargo lights with LED bulbs and noticed the upper right corner near the light fixture has a small amount of paint missing from my 2016.

Looks like I'll be touching up that area with GM touch up paint when the weather gets nice again
