door hinge spring

I replaced the hinge pins on drivers side door of 2000 s10 How does one get the spring back in. I have the tool and got it out with that, but it doesn't work for reinstall. I have tried the vice and zip ties and have gotten close, but I must be doing something wrong. Any thoughts??

I have had mine out a couple of times. The only thing I can think of is when you position the tool on the spring have it as far out on the end of the spring then slam it off the tool with a steel rod and hammer. WEAR EYE PROTECTION in case the spring goes wayward.
