Hey guys. My first post on here. I've been trolling for the three months since I bought my 2015 Sierra. The truck was new when I bought it. I went to the dealership today to get my first oil change and brought up that the maps on my nav system were terribly out of date. Just reading through here, I knew they would send me to GMC. I live in St. Louis and the maps dont have a pretty major highway that was completed nearly 5 years ago. Dealership sent me to GMCs Infotainment Customer Support and GMC said to talk to the dealership. I bought the truck new 3 months ago and the maps dont have a road that's 5 years old. GMC wants me to buy the update and wouldnt tell me which part number I already have. So for all I know I could have bought the truck new with maps that are three part numbers old.

 

I dont want to pay $1200 to get the truck/phone compatibility. I just want my maps to be up to date. Has anyone had any luck getting these updated by ANYONE? Its insane to me that I paid $45,000 three months ago and they want me to buy the new maps. This is my first GMC and my first spankin new truck... I'm not sure if I'll buy another. I bought a new truck so that I wouldnt have to mess with this kind of silly stuff.

Gotta pay to update your nav. They've been this way for years now.

 

Map Data Updates

 

The map data in the vehicle is the most up-to-date information available when the vehicle was produced. The map data is updated periodically, provided that the map information has changed.

 

For questions about the operation of the navigation system or the update process, contact the GM Nav Disc Center toll-free phone number, 1-877-NAV-DISC (1-877-628-3472) or go to the center’s website, www.gmnavdisc.com. If updates are needed, call the GM Nav Disc Center or order online.

 

To order, have the vehicle’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) available. This helps the center make sure that the correct and most up-to-date map data for the vehicle is received. See “Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)” in the owner manual.

There is no guarantee the new maps will have your road either.

 

Best to check out a late build date 2016 or 2017 on a dealer lot and see if the road is on there, my house is 6 years old and the road its on is not on the NAV on my 2016 chevy.

What he said. It sucks but that's the way all the manufacturers work. At least the price has come down a little -- up until last year they were charging $199.95 plus $4.95 S&H.

 

When I was negotiating the price on my 2015 the dealer tried to tell me updates were downloaded over the air for free. I argued with the salesman, sales manager, and general manager that they were all wrong. Like you when I went for my first "free" oil change I asked about the update. When they couldn't get it to work they did some digging and found out I had to pay for it just like I told them. I knew this during negotiation so I got them down lower figuring I would have to pay later. I still chewed them out and left the dealership.

 

I ripped them in all the GM surveys they sent me and haven't been back to that dealership since ...

Because of that, GM's nav system is a ripoff in my opinion.

You can get a heck of a deal on a TomTom or Garmin with lifetime maps and don't have to worry with the stealership incompetence. And the GPS can be moved to any other vehicle you have.

 

For me, USB port has killed the need for SiriusXM, too.

I don't use car navs anymore, use my iPhone and my old garmin. The iPhone will use live data and take you around trouble with less cost. I use garmin on the dash for back up just because iv had it forever.

Google Maps work great on my Samsung Galaxy S5. I have unlimited data so I feel no reason to have in-dash Nav or a stand alone Nav.

I always use my cell phone, but usually have the nav displayed.. I drive almost daily on a road that isnt in the nav. Its just really annoying when I drive through nothing.. And for the amount of money I paid for a new truck, the maps should be jacked up. Ford's maps are great out of the box!
