That is the rule of thumb that I have always gone by.

Trying to keep warranty valid so if the oil monitor says change at 2500 I have to change at 2500. Don't want to give them a reason to deny a claim. My truck before this was a 2001 Silverado with 94,000 in pristine condition before it was stolen from my driveway thus the new truck we speak of. It had an oil monitor on it but it never came on and I changed my oil every 4,000. When my warranty is over I'll go back to every 4,000 with good oil. Been keeping junk running since I was a kid in the early 70's.

Look at how many miles on the truck, and look how infrequent (time between) the oil changes were done. I would just run it to 5000 miles and see where it is, get it changed and reset it then.

Got to keep warranty valid or I'd use my experience and change every 4000 like I always have. If the oil monitor says change at 2500 I have to change to keep my warranty valid.

No matter the miles, it is recommended to change the oil at least once a year, unless you do an oil analysis and it shows that you don't have to.

Screw the OLM. Change oil every 4k and be done with it. The OLM is a GUIDE. Any name brand off the shelf oil will protect you for the 4k miles and your engine is not going to blow nor will you warranty be voided. You're making too much out of this

 

You do understand the OLM knows nothing about the condition of your oil?

 

 

Keep track of mileage

Monitor OLM

If necessary reset OLM and drive 'till you get 4k oe 1 year

 

Again no quality brand of oil is going to fail before 4k under normal conditions

 

Spend a few bucks and get a sample analyzed and see for yourself

I have the same problem:  my truck is currently a garage queen; and the OLM decrements just sitting there.

 

It'll get driven more next year when work travel slows down; for now I'll just bite the bullet & short-change the oil.  With the Costco oil & a filter it's under $35.

 

ETA:  2019 LD purchased 6/19.  Current mileage is 3K.

I wonder how many dealers are just resetting the OLM on their trucks that sit on the lot and the OLM is down to 5% or so?  I noticed on my 19 that the OLM has gone down fast from March until now when I started driving again since I sold my 2002.  GM must have done a major change to the OLM on these because my 2014 Cruze diesel hasn't gone done much and it has sat as well from March.

I changed the oil in my Camaro last October. I am at like 25% on the OLM and not sure the milage but it’s probably 500ish miles since then. Lots of shorter trips. I plan to change once I hit 3k miles and do an oil analysis to see if things are really degrading as much as the OLM is showing.
