Hey guys,

The idea of installing the 22997089 remote start on my 16' sierra elevation has been floating around for a bit.

I've done a bit of research and i found out id have to take the truck to the dealership so they can flash the truck.

Well this past weekend my brother SCORED a GM Tech 2 scanner. Would i have to take the truck to the dealership or can the tech 2 perform what needs to be done?

Thanks

Nope.

Scanner does not contain all potential software for all vehicles, no way. It is just for scanning and resetting codes and doubtfully even says what the code is for you have to look what a specific code means online. A firmware update needs to be downloaded and installed on truck, said firmware update would not be available to the public as it is all proprietary. You can only get this from GM.

When you bought the truck you also bought all included software but no right to any updates 'legally speaking', they could technically turn around and charge us a licence fee for updates such as a licenced copy of Photoshop or any other such software, but that would obviously be bad for business because software is not their core business.

Please let us know if they do charge you anything other that labor/shoptime ... but I think the update itself should be free. The silver lining is if your warranty is still active you have no choice but to use them anyway. Aftermarket remote start installs are a big no no while under warranty, best to have a and keep the record of who installed it. (They cannot just void a warranty outright unless they can prove it but really not worth fighting over it for rem start)

Don't know about the capability of the tech 2. The remote start kit that I had installed on my 09 came with a code. The dealer had to call GM and get another code to be able to complete the instal on a truck that did not have it from the factory. I doubt they have changed that step on the newer trucks.
