Code after having BG GDI intake valve cleaning

P0420 code came up about 5 minutes after having the direct injection 15k service done (at 17k). I cleared it, drove around and it didn't come back.

 

A few hours later, went for another drive and it came back up.

 

Haven't had a chance to Research. Any ideas? Concerns?

 

I guess it is expected that chunks of carbon or whatever build up were going to break loose and work their way through exhaust. The code didn't come back on my 3rd drive. I'm just hoping it isn't going to keep throwing the code.

It's preventative maintenance to keep the intake valves clean.

BG makes a cleaner used to clean out all the carbon deposits on these DI engines. The service team just sprays the cleaner into the intake while running the engine at 2k rpm.

 

"Sticky, heavy deposits build rapidly on the backs of valves and in air intake systems of gasoline direct injection engines (GDI). Cleaning GDI intake valves requires a potent formula applied with proper equipment, due to both the placement of the injector inside the combustion chamber and the complexity of the intake design.

I had my local shop do it as they were listed on BG's website.

 

I didn't want to do it myself because it looked like their was some specific equipment needed to do the job properly.

I believe a bunch of guys on here have done it themselves. Did the shop offer to read the code and give you an explanation?

 

I am at 7k miles, plan to do this or a similar cleaning at about 10k.

Yeah I really wish I would have done it sooner. 10k sounds ideal.

The code didn't come up until I left the shop. I cleared it right away to see if it would come back. It didn't until I left later in the day. I haven't asked the shop yet but I'm sure they could provide some good feedback.

 

Forgot to mention, I'm at 17,000 miles now.

Yesterday, I had 4 rims replaced under warranty and while I was there, I had the dealer do my BG Air and Fuel Induction Service, I'm at about 31,500 miles and all is well, no codes as of yet, but I only drove it home, which is about 8 miles or so.

 

I stomped on it pretty good when I pulled out of the dealer - in my mirror I saw a ton of white smoke coming from my exhaust but it only lasted for a few seconds. I floored it up to 80 mph to check for any vibration with the new rims - glad to say she still runs smooth as silk, and I didn't really notice a difference in performance, but I will take it for a longer ride today and see if I notice a difference.

i spit a P0420 after doing a seafoam treatment. basically clogged up the cats with all the carbon that came off your intake. Dealer replaced my cats on warranty (obviously didn't tell them about the treatment). Good luck.

I just got back, I filled it up with regular gas and took it for about a 40 mile drive, wound it up pretty good and yes, there's a definite increase in acceleration, maybe 15 hp or so. Not crazy but certainly noticeable.

 

Also, the dealer only recommends getting that service every 30,000 miles.

Probably going to pop back up... i cleared mine like 5 times. Could be dirty O2 sensors but i didn't get that far before letting the dealership handle it.

New cats going in tomorrow. So what are your thoughts on doing this service again? I'm thinking I need to do it every 10k instead of 15-17k.

That's the million dollar question. I did seafoam at 15k, had no issues. The plan was to do it every 15k after that to keep the top end clean. I did it at 30k and that's when i had the issue. Im coming up on 40k now and debating if i should do it again or not a 45. Im leaning towards not doing it and just getting the heads and intake cleaned at like 100k or something like that.

 

Side note: i feel like BG should cover any issues that their treatment may bring up. Seeing as how you have to have a certified shop do it.
