LED Lights for AMP Steps

I'm currently using these lights for my AMP steps: https://www.amazon.com/RioRand-2-Piece-Waterproof-Aluminum-Daytime/dp/B00C1YI2XA/ref=pd_sim_263_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=VW3YEG8QJ7JC6763NXRK

...But they keep failing on me. I don't like the lights that are supplied with the AMP steps because I feel they aren't bright enough and are too purple.

Any suggestions? What are you guys running?

How does the wiring work with these and the steps do they throw a switch that comes on and then they turn on?

Would we need to wash these off after mudd gets on them?

Very interested. As I am

Purchasing some amp steps week after next.

I tapped into the interior dome lighting so that anytime the dome lights are on the step lights are on. So when you unlock the vehicle they come on then dim out like the dome lights do when you close the door. Just used the connectors showing in the picture in the link. I ran the drivers side through the parking brake boot in the drivers floor board. Then on the passanger side there is a plastic gromet that i drilled a small hole in and ran the wire into the cab on that side. Used silicone to seal the hole up tight and then fished the wire through the back of the center console to the drivers side. Wired both sides together then to the wiring module under the drivers side dash with the power. Used a metal bracket up under the dash as a ground and they work great.

I have the oem step bars that seem to protect them from dirt and grime fairly well. But when i wash the truck i just run the wash mit over them to clean the up. If you are running the amp steps they may be pretty well protected when they are retracted.

In my experience, it wouldn't do much good wiring them into the dome light with AMP steps because when they fold up it blocks almost all of the light. Therefore, anyone with AMP steps could just use the existing wires that are provided with the steps.

Good call gSwift. I was just answering chrislcrews on how mine are set up. Also depends on where you mount them up. I am not sure where the lights that are part of the amp steps mount. Either way makes for a good mod as they provide a good amount of light.

Yeah but your door has to be open for the steps to fold down so tapping into the dome light would be a great place.

I agree, but where my lights are mounted, when the steps are retracted you see very little light. If my drivers door is open and the steps are down it triggers both sides to lights up. So when I'm on the passenger side and the steps are up and the lights are illuminated, I barely see them since they tuck up so tight.

Yours looks good though. I went with a similar product as you at first but I didn't like that I could see the actual LED's from 10 or 20 feet back. I bet your factory steps prevent yours from showing. I bet you don't any trouble finding that thing in a dark parking lot lol

The whole point of installing those lights is to illuminate the steps when they're down though.

Am I missing something?? They illuminate as soon as they drop and turn off when they retract. So if its tapped into the dome light but the steps are up, then it does you no good because the light is blocked

I wired mine the way I did because when I added hid I turned my exterior lighting off so I dont burn out the ballasts. Added the lights so when I unlock my truck they come on to light the steps and provide lots of exterior lighting. Either way if done right they are very functional and look good. Just plan out where you want to mount them to suit your needs.

That makes perfect sense to be because your steps don't retract and pull up in front of the lights. If I had normal steps then id definitely do the same. But since it would do me no good to have them illuminated before I had the door open since you wouldn't see the lighting, then I just used the wiring from the AMP steps

    • Breaking News!    I'm going to tell you that I'm going to tell you.  Then I'm going to tell you what I'm going to tell you.  Then I'm going to tell you.  Then I'm going to tell you what I told  you.  Then I'm going to tell you what I'm about to tell you on the other side of the break.  Then we're going to break. Then I'm not going to tell you what I told you I was going to tell you.  But I'll tell you something else that is Breaking News just coming to the desk that everyone reported on yesterday.  Then I'll tease a human interest telling I'll get to on the other side of a larger break. Then I'll tell you one item in 20 seconds and go back to an even longer break. Longest break of the night.  Then I'll tell you a fluff piece that takes 10 seconds and sign off into a three minute break while you wait for the next 30 minutes of rinse and repeat on the local news.    In al you'll get about 12 minutes of something, 5 minutes of which is worth hearing in a 30 minute show and 18 minutes of advertising at a sound level twice as loud as the news.    Of course you can switch to cable news and hear 12 different people tell the same four stories in much the same format as the Network News for 20 hours of which the majority will be advertising.  And four hours of late night Specials about things you wonder why you stayed up to listen to. Half of which will be repeats.....   OR you can go for a drive
    • Did you ever figure this out? My 2022 Trail Boss, and now my 2026 LT did this from time to time.  I believe it was more connected to Android Auto and my phone being the cause. Maybe try going for a drive, sans cell phone.... and see if it happens?
    • I have a 2026 Silverado LT, the non bose as well.  Upgrading the door speakers is pretty straightforward. You could honestly go to walmart, or Auto Zone/ O Reilly and get a set of 6x9s for the front, and 6.5s for the rear. You do also have to get some adapters for each, but they are like $10 a pair on Amazon. Then some plug and play harnesses that are about $10 a pair on Amazon as well.  And I would also suggest a 10 pack of the Amazon Basics sound deadening. Slap that all around the speakers and on the open metal of the inside of the door. And your golden.   I am currently doing this with my Silverado. Although I am having a bit of trouble because I am snooby I guess and bought some Alpine S2 S69c's which are 2 way components and I am having to wire from the door up to the dash....  Having never installed speakers before, its taking me just a bit to get everything correct. But if you dont buy expensive component speakers, and just some $40-$50 door speakers. You will DRASTICALLY improve the sound over these stock paper cone junk speakers. I thought my Silverado had an issue with the radio/ sound for a while.  Come to find out.  The stock speakers are just THAT SH*TTY   I cannot wait to have some decent sound in the truck   What did you end up doing?
    • Its all automatic based on yaw sensor data.  If enough incline is detected, it engages.   My recommendation though would be to disengage it before driving off and not let it auto disengage by touching the gas pedal.  The HD trucks use the same setup as prior years, the drum in hat park brake.  But now with an electric actuator.  If you drive off repeatedly over time, it can torque the park brake shoes and can also prematurely wear them out.           Electric console shift will set the park brake on flat ground too.  Pretty sure they've got it programmed to activate every time.
