Extremely rough ride

My advice is take a ride in another one and see what you think.

It is a pickup with little weight in the rear and stiff springs to take quite a bit of added weight in the bed, well, they ride like pickup trucks on bumpy roads.

My last '15 Silverado was equipped with Z71 and this '16 is not, dont really notice much difference between them.

You could have a bad shock or two, I had two bad factory Rancho shocks in the rear but it would just cause the truck to bounce when you came to a stop, didnt affect the highway ride much.

I've driven trucks for years. Ford ranger, Dodge Ram 1500, had an 05 Silverado. They all rode better than this truck. I'll see what the dealership says.

These do ride a quite a bit rougher than my last few rams, the frames on these are pretty stiff and you certainly feel the road. Plus the lower profile tires on the newer trucks dont help.

hope the dealer gets you straightened out.

Hello guys. My 2016 Silverado has an extremely rough ride. On the freeway the rear bounces up and down like crazy, even my wife notices it and she couldn't notice her car engine being on fire.

Around town I can hear and feel every small imperfection on the road, the entire truck will vibrate bad and sounds horrible. I drive on M5 around town so I know it isn't the AFM. I also have the Chevy shake issue but I think this bothers me worse. My dad checked the ujoint bolts and they were really loose, around 35-40 ft/lbs. We tightened them up to 70.

Taken it to three different dealerships and all they've done is road force balance the tires. Last dealership had it for an hour and called me to pick it up because their "suspension guy" was in training and he didn't want anyone else working on it. I have to take it back next week sometime.

Anyone here have the same issue? Any insight on what it could be? I do frequent 3 hour trips and it's driving me insane.

I'd appreciate any help.

If your talking about the U-Joint retainer bolts that hold the u-joint to the rear end yoke you should replace them before driving, hopefully you didn't distort the u-joint cup.

Yoke Retainer Bolt (Requires a NEW bolt.)

25 Y

18 lb ft

Could the op have the z60 suspension with the 17 inch wheels? That is a very unforgiving suspension.

Think the OP is talking about the leaf spring u-bolts, not u-joints.

So is this a 3/4 or 1 ton Silverado? If it is a 1/2 ton 2 whl drive truck it should just glide across the road man.

Correct sir. Thanks for the clarification.

I did another 3 hour drive again today. The tightening of the spring U-Bolts helped a lot. I still have some bounce but not as bad as before.

Hopefully the dealership can fix it.

I am still having the Chevy shake issue though. Between 70-80 the entire truck shakes like crazy. I've posted a few videos online of it.

not sure what tightening the u bolts could have corrected, anyone else find this strange?

Could be just me, but it did feel better. I got the suggestion from this website. Either way they were really loose so it didn't hurt to tighten to spec or close to it.

What is the spec to shoot for when tightening the U-Bolts? Think I read 79 ft. lbs. somewhere on the forum.... is that correct?

Thanks

Hard to tell. Ive read 80, 59, 75. I just did 70 on mine. I'm just glad I checked mine because I don't think they even had 35. My dad and I were pretty shocked.

Thanks Espo. I'll check mine today.

I just checked the tq. on my U-Bolts. I 1st set the tq wrench to 40 lbs and was able to get a 1/4 turn before the click on two nuts. So I went ahead and set the wrench to 70ish and had at it. All 8 nuts had plenty of turn in them and the Us are all set at 70 lbs. now. I doubt this will make any difference in the truck's shake but ....

What pisses me off is at my 1st visit to the dealer regarding the shake, the tech behind the service counter told me tire balance and steering components were checked, as was the suspension. Before taking delivery I had my truck rust proofed by the dealer (yeah...I know) and there is black rust proof material all over the bottom of the truck, including the rear springs and U-Bolts. When I torqued the U-Bolts today, none of the black rust proofing had been disturbed on the U-bolts or nuts. So as far as I'm concerned the service pecker lied to me. That, or they re-treated the nuts to the U-bolts... I'll never know.
