Exhaust Guys: Difference Choosing Muffler vs Full Exhaust?

Ive been somewhat interested in getting the GM Borla exhaust. I dont want anything annoying or stupid loud but the nice deep tone. I have heard it in videos and in person on a Denali Suburban and I like the sound.

 

Anyways the full price of the exhaust system is $1000+ BUT recently I just saw a few videos of guys with just the S-type muffler and tips on their stock exhaust system.

 

So my question is besides price & parts, whats the difference in just getting the muffler/tips vs the full setup?

Unless you're racing it, nothing. Only difference is spending 2-300 vs $1k for a little sound. I went with the Borla GMPP sport muffler with no resonator and couldn't be happier.

What's a ballpark estimate for a muffler shop to install just the muffler and tip?

I think I paid $80 for the muffler and tip to be welded in. $40 to cut out resonator and weld in straight pipe.

Any guess why everyone doesnt go this route then, why pay for the system if you can get muffler cheaper? Does doing the muffler void warranty or soemthing?

Is the system bolt on? Perhaps that's easier for some as opposed to taking their truck to a shop?

Not sure im not mechanically inclined. But regardless of easy if it saved me $600+ id very happily take my butt to a shop and have it done.

 

If its just price though thats crazy

Just for ease of installation and to give people the satisfaction of saying they have a stainless catback system. Lol. I would never pay that much.

You'll get drone when AFM is activated. I had a '14 Silverado with a Magnaflow muffler & dual tips. Terrible drone.

I now have the full Borla S-Type catback, no drone.

 

And I'm pretty sure this is the only difference, besides the exhaust tone.

Does your Borla cb still have the resonator?

I have zero drone. I got mine directly from Borlas website. They don't sell the GMPP one anywhere else. Discontinued years ago from the dealer.

 

I called Borla directly and they said to keep the flapper. Don't do it. It was super quiet and I was scared that I wasted my money. Clamped it open and it was a night and day difference.

No sir, I have the full Borla catback, which only comes with pipes, 1 in/2out muffler, and tips.

The only thing you really gain with a full exhaust would be mandrel bent pipes which in my opinion doesn't make a different unless it's a very high performance vehicle. I just had a shop remove everything from the muffler back. put in a Flowmaster Super 44 single in/dual out with the tailpipes and black chrome tips. Parts and labor was just over $300. Also depends on the material used which can be a plus for a cat-back, but just tell the shop to use stainless. Another thing is that I'm way picky so it would be hard to fine a system the exact way I want and I don't settle for much. So it's cheaper and you can have the exact system setup the way you want if a shop just builds it.

So what exactly does "drone" sound like? Is it a sound like your still pushing the throttle even though you arent?

 

Wouldnt that be expected if the exhaust is louder than stock to begin with.
