Exhaust Guys: Difference Choosing Muffler vs Full Exhaust?

So what exactly does "drone" sound like? Is it a sound like your still pushing the throttle even though you arent?

Wouldnt that be expected if the exhaust is louder than stock to begin with.

You should be able to Youtube this sound. It's like a flutter/helicopter sound you only get when in V4 mode.

But if you tune out the AFM mode with a Range device/other tuner = no drone.

Is it worth $1k+ for these full CBs/top of the line exhausts? Probably not. Muffler shops are usually full proof.

But then you start asking is a $30k-40+ truck worth it if you don't tow/go off-roading everyday? Probably not again.

You could argue that a $10k truck could do the exact same thing for you. It's all personal preference.

I personally wanted this exhaust so I could switch it over to a 2017 later down the line.

Or if I get a different vehicle, it'll go to my dad who has a 2015 Sierra.

I remember hearing one video had a helicopter sound but all he did was remote start the car and it was sitting there. I will keep checking though.

Thanks for the replies

I have gotten confused by how many exhaust/muffler threads I've read where people say they get zero drone and others say they get bad drone when removing the flapper valve.

I too would absolutely love to just be able to cut out the huge stock muffler and weld in it's place a nice Borla, Flowmaster, or Magnaflow muffler, all the while KEEPING the FLAPPER valve assembly in the stock pipe. But I'm lost as to whether this will NOT have drone or have drone. I don't need a full catback as the few if any HP gains from it (without a tune) are pointless, and spending $1000-1200 for a catback just for a bit of sound and some nice tips is a waste of money.

I heard a video on Youtube of someone who put in a Flowmaster Super 40 or whatever it's called in place of the stock muffler and it sounded nearly perfect.

Drone is heard inside the cabin when you are cruising. It is an annoying bellowing hum or sometimes "baffling" sound like you get when you open a rear window of a car all by itself.

But it's usually a deep bellowing sound that gets old really fast.

It might depend on how aggressive the muffler is. I have a Flowmaster Super 44 and it sounds more like the engine brake on a big diesel commercial truck instead of a helicopter. I tried trucking and I loved hearing it while in the mountains so it doesn't bother me.

I am in the exact same boat. Ive been contemplating getting a 18" magna flow keeping the flapper and keeping the resonator. I dont want to fool around with deleting the afm and dont need a full cat back exhaust.

one of us should be the sacrificial goat and try it out...

Go about 2 minutes in or so and he shares when the drone occurs. If you're old with bad hearing it shouldn't be a problem

This is exactly right.

I had my muffler cut out and a straight pipe welded in but left the flapper valve. Definitely a difference in sound but not as much as I was hoping for. So I clamped the flapper valve open and it was day and night and what I was hoping it would sound like from the beginning. I've heard some drone at times but it doesn't bother me and is very minimal. I also just couldn't see spending over $1000 on exhaust just for sound. Maybe once it's paid off, but for now it sounds good to me!

If you're worried about drone, leave the flapper valve on the exhaust. You can always clamp it open if it's not loud enough for you IMO.

I'm going to have the flapper removed, but keep it just in case the drone is too much or something then I can have it put back on. I have a feeling I will like the louder sound so I will deal with some drone over it being quiet.

I always think you're better off buying the muffler you want and getting what you want fabbed up
