I'm thinking about buying a 91 Chevy C1500 Ext.-cab from a small dealer. It has 117,000 miles and a V-8. It runs good and the interior is in good condition. The body though has a hole about 4 inches wide completely through the bottom panel, a big dent in the tail gate and scratches throughout the body. This will be my first car and I'm not so concerned with the body but dependability. The dealer told me it's worth $5,800 and since I'm paying cash he'll let me have it for $4,000. Does this sound right. I'm still looking around for a better deal.

any idea how much a bodyshop charges to fix the hole?

check out edmunds and bluebook. The dealer will tell you anything to get you to buy. Expect the rust to get worse especially if they did a poor job to "cover it up" Expect the truck to start burning oil or leaking if it hasn't started already. When you buy an older truck in that mileage, drivetrain components start wearing and figure in waterpumps and other things. If you are a doityourselfer maybe consider it, but otherwise figure in costs of getting it fixed too and compare how much you would be willing to spend.

Hell yea that is high. I got a 96 K1500 ext. cab in pretty good shape and it is only worth 8 grand. Too bad I paid $21,000 for it.

Trust me, you don't want a rusted out truck. Right now you don't think it is too important, but it will only bug the crap out of you the longer you own the truck and the more attached you become to it. Face it, if you found a truck forum, you are a car guy. Being a car guy, the condition of your vehicle will become a great concern to you.

People pay some outrageous prices for used trucks out here in Southern California. You don't see much rust on the trucks here due to the desert air.

I'd pass up the 91 and keep looking. Keep the cash handy because when the right truck comes along you will have the cash to wave in the owners face.

The age isnt as important to me as the mileage and the condition of the body. Find a truck that is straight without all the body problems. Put you're money into the engine and things that will make it run better.
