2016 Silverado 10+ paint chips at 2,700 miles

Hi all..

 

I have a 2016 Silverado that I bought in October of last year. Truck has 2,700 miles on it.

 

I do NOT tailgate and it has has maybe 6 miles worth of dirt road at slow speeds.

Affected areas are left fender, hood, both front doors, drivers side rear door, door handle and quarter panel.

 

Is 10 paint chips in 2,700 miles considered normal as my dealer has advised?

 

I apologize as I know this topic has been beaten to death but I'm very convinced that without spending $1,000 on a clear bra that my truck will look like total garbage by the end of the year.

Dam that sucks. It's just thinner paint these days. The clear coat is the only thing providing any protection.

 

Unfortunately I think that's just the way it is and the dealer nor GM isn't going to do anything about it.

My painted z71 front bumper has a 10 chips alone at 8k miles

My '16 that was purchased in October had 5 or 6 good sized ones within the first 1500 miles after a 1,000 Mike road trip. As other have stated it happens, but I will agree that this trucks paint chips far easier than my '11 I traded in ever did.

Buy a Dr. Colorchip kit and just try to keep after the nicks. Not much more you can do ...

I'm at 18k miles w/ close to 50+ chips everywhere. Even with a sealer/sealant to protect the paint more.

It's the terrible water based paint GM had to use on these trucks.

 

Either get a wrap job, clear bra, or kevlar/LineX coating. I'll be going one of these routes if I keep the trucks for 50k+

welcome to the new world of GM paint. last 6-8 years has gone down like crazy in quality and thickness and this new generation of trucks is even worse. if you don't wipe down your truck with totally clean new microfibers after a wash you will scratch the piss out of it. I would go nuts about it and then I stopped caring after realizing theres nothing you can do except a vinyl wrap and that produces its own issues with time. drive it, put a 100k on it and trade it in. will hold enough value where you can still swap out to the same monthly payments. I go through a truck every 3 years now and my payments always the same.

what is concerning me with this truck is that my 2014 Silverado had zero chips at 22,000 miles when I traded it in. The paint on this truck seems to chip if you even look at it wrong.

It is not just GM, my wifes 2011 Lincoln MKX had the same issue. I had to pay out of pocket to have the entire front end repainted by the 50k mile point. As a comparison, our Audi SQ5 with 25k miles on it paint looks almost flawless on the front end. My 2016 Sierra had Xpel on it from day 1.

I put the clear bra on before I took delivery for this exact reason, so far no chips on the front of my 2016. Although I have a rather large chip on my rear wheel inner part of the spoke of all places!!

I have 2 chips under my driver side window in under 1500 miles. The paint is real thin. I have a white truck with no clear coat.

Yep, those are clearly impact marks.

I had mine wrapped days after I bought it, in a matte Suntek paint protection film. I love it!
