2016 Silverado 10+ paint chips at 2,700 miles

These trucks are not the same GM trucks everyone is used to, Everything is made cheap, they save money on not putting extra coats of paint. My truck had atleast 20 chips with 6k miles... Cheap as dirt. actually... dirt might be worth more

Hi all..

I have a 2016 Silverado that I bought in October of last year. Truck has 2,700 miles on it.

I do NOT tailgate and it has has maybe 6 miles worth of dirt road at slow speeds.

Affected areas are left fender, hood, both front doors, drivers side rear door, door handle and quarter panel.

Is 10 paint chips in 2,700 miles considered normal as my dealer has advised?

I apologize as I know this topic has been beaten to death but I'm very convinced that without spending $1,000 on a clear bra that my truck will look like total garbage by the end of the year.

Looks exactly like my 15. My rear passenger door and passenger bed sode ha e 4 or 5 chips that look exactly like yours. The dealership touched them up for me while I was getting some other warranty work. It sucks!!

It is not normal driving either. I have a 2014 Impala with 33,000. I drive the same roads. The Impala has no chips. Not even on the front bumper.

It is a problem specific to these trucks. To those that say, it is a truck. It is normal. No! When you pay $50k for a product. I expect a quality product.

Good Mud Flaps help allot. I still get the odd hit but now it's so low when I touch it up no one even knows.

I put these on before I washed the entire truck but the splash you can see on the truck in this picture doesn't

even happen anymore. I get a little just on the underside of the bumper now. The fronts only splash up to the steps.

So they help allot.

I bought my truck to use it, to haul stuff, not stand around wiping it with a diaper & crying over "paint chips". YMMV

I have 0 paint chips on my '14 all-terrain with 33k miles. I drive it like a normal vehicle in all sorts of conditions, speeds, and surfaces

Unless you count the painted front bumper, which is known issue

sort of on topic here.. anybody coming out to find random places the metal seems to have buckled? got a little dimple on my front pass side fender. appeared out of nowhere one day.

very unsettling but nothing PDR cant fix...I hope.

I run a detailing business and keep my truck in the best possible condition. Best Microfiber cloths, foam baths so cut down on how much I wipe down the car, blow dry, and then protect everything with a great sealant.

guess what... I have a ton of chips. Luckily with white diamond, its harder to see but I notice each one.

My Deep Ocean Blue 2016 has multiple paint chips with 7500 miles on it. The paint is garbage on these. I am well aware it is a truck and I do use it as one, but my 2003 F250 with 220,000 has less chips than this non shifting paint chipping Silverado. I will never buy another GM product.

welcome to the new world of GM paint. last 6-8 years has gone down like crazy in quality and thickness and this new generation of trucks is even worse. if you don't wipe down your truck with totally clean new microfibers after a wash you will scratch the piss out of it. I would go nuts about it and then I stopped caring after realizing theres nothing you can do except a vinyl wrap and that produces its own issues with time. drive it, put a 100k on it and trade it in. will hold enough value where you can still swap out to the same monthly payments. I go through a truck every 3 years now and my payments always the same.

Then apparently Ford, Toyota, and Chrysler are all using GM's new water based paint because paint chips are a common problems on all the new trucks. Google it.

I have 2 chips under my driver side window in under 1500 miles. The paint is real thin. I have a white truck with no clear coat.

FYI ... you do have clear coat ..All have a base coat clear coat nowadays

My 15 has 18K on the clock and I've repaired a few chips with paint pens, fine art brushes and 5K foam back wet dry paper. For this first year as I washed and waxed I took note of things like spray patterns and did as Big Bad Sierra. No drill mud flaps. Go Rhino underbody bars. Clear bra on hood and front fenders. Inside door sills and door edges. Truck already had the rocker area sprayed with the factory rubber paint which seems to do a fair job.

I made some driving notes such as keeping a telephone pole distance between me and the fella ahead. At 50 mph it took three seconds to cover the distance so about 220 feet. I've seen studies by Mazda that say at 60 mph rock chip distance is 167 feet. A pole is easy to gauge. Staying off the rough stuff. I drive lesser driven secondary hard surfaced road when they are going my way. Same speed limits and distances by and large.

I still get the stray chip such as being passed by a big rig on the interstate that thinks 3 feet is a good enough space for his 55 footer. A kid on a street throwing ice balls with rocks in them. Suicide birds and the occasional salt spreader piling it down deep enough and wide enough to land a B-52. They got quotas. And the drunk that sprays you with gravel from the shoulder.

And while I have limited to a great degree the damage it is still far and away easier to chip these things than is was my cars of the 60/70's. I find it inexcusable to lay down 2.5 mils to cover all three coats (base color and clear) and call it good enough on a truck that cost as much as these things do.
