Synthentic Motor Oil

Anybody tried Mobile One or any of the high quality Synthentics? I was thinking of trying the Mobile One depending on what kinda replies I got.

Yup, I use it exclusively. I have used Mobil 1, Redline, AMSOil, and Royal Purple. Mobil 1 is the easiest to get, similar protection, 95% of the return for 1% of the hassle. :sigh:

So you'd say that it'd be a good idea to swap to Synthetic on a motor with 156k on it? My motor has never really had much trouble, and burns a little bit of oil (I had maybe quart every 1.5 month).

If you have 156K on your engine, don't bother wasting your money on Mobil 1 or any other high priced synthetic oil. If you're going through a quart in a month and a half, the wear on your internal parts is beyond what benefits Mobil 1 can offer. Stick with a good quality "dino" oil and do regular changes to slow the effects of "aging" on your powerplant. It sounds like it's time for R&R (rebuild or replace).

Good luck.

I would try two treatments of Auto RX. Got to AutoRX.com and read up on it. It will tell you exactly how to apply it to your application for high mileage engines.

Check out this site and see what everyone else is saying. I have been following this for a while now and I have not come across one bad thing.

I even bought some and put it in my father-in-laws NorthStar engine. They are known to use oil and his did. About a quart in 2k miles. After treating his engine with the Auto Rx per the web pages instructions it now only uses less than a quarter of a quart in 3k miles. It really made a difference.

If you hang around and read up on it and other stuff it is amazing what you learn. It is all from everyday people trying to get as much out of their vehicles as we are. No fancy testing or commercials from high dollar oil companies.

Personally once you do the Auto Rx then you could use synthetics. As for saving your engine. Well if you changed the oil every 3k then there is about as much wear as there would be if you ran synthetics to start with. You just didn't get the advantage of easier starting, better mileage, better emissions, and a cleaner inside of the engine due to synthetics clean really well.

There are a ton of vehicles out there that are running synthetic and have well over 150k on them, some over 200k with no problems. It is up to you if you want the added benefits with easier starting, increase mileage and lower emissions. Is the added cost of the synthetic worth it? Oh and if you want you can extend your drain intervals as well if you so desire.

Your oil consumption can possibly decrease as well. I have read that too on bobstheoilguy.com. Various individuals claimed that when they switched to synthetic's their comsumption went down. You can look at it this way. If it doesn't work out at least you tried and you can go back to regular oil and what you were doing in the past. It will not hurt a thing.

Like MarkD said Mobil 1 is the easiest to find. Red Line is second in terms of finding and Amsoil is easy if you don't mind calling in oil orders and having it delivered to your door. As for prices it depends on where you live. Wally world usually runs great deals on Mobil 1.

Like I said before. Try it and if it doesn't seem to be what you expected you can always go back. It will not hurt a thing. If you do switch I would recommend flushing your engine first.

"Nothing ventured nothing gained" :sigh:

I switched to Mobil 1 at 2500 miles. and plan to use it for the life of the truck. In your case the damage is already done and you are trying to maintain a worn machine. Stay with regular oil. Good luck with the truck.

I put synthetic in all my trucks and SUV's at the first oil change, well worth the price difference for superior protection.

OU Mike,

Try it! I changed my old truck with 350K miles over to synthetic. Changed Motor, Trans, and rear. Helped the gas milage and oil consumption dropped to less than half. I was using about a quart in 2500 miles. I used less than a quart in 6000 miles the after the change. It is a 6.2 Diesel. I went from 15-50 Mystik I had been running for about 250K to Mobil Delvac 5W40.

The motor is worn..but completely trouble free. It doesn't use any more oil than it should, and it runs really smooth. Think I may check out the AutoRx and see where that gets me. I'm starting college in the fall, and a reliable truck is definatly what I need. Can't afford the 03' just yet. Thanks everyone, appriciate everyones opinion.

I changed my dads 95 454 to amsoil at 100k. He had started to use 1/4 qt every 3k. Never used synthetic before, and at 75k, started using the valvoline maxlife. I did the flush and switched hoping it wouldn't start using more. Now at 106k, he is still full. I think the maxlife oils don't do much. If it's leaking, synthetics can clean it out and make it leak more. If it's burning, sometimes synthetics can consume less with the higher viscosity (less breakdown).

i'ved used mobil 1 for years, but 4 dollars a quart is a little steep, so now i use the mobil synthetic blend for half the price, and notice no differece so far

I use Mobil 1 in my wife's Volvo and I buy it from WalMart. Currently they have a big 5 Quart bottle for $18.88 which for the mathematically challenged is $3.78 per quart.

Might put it in the truck. Anyone know the oil capacity of a 5.3?

the 5.3L uses 6 qts. of oil. i have 51,000 on my clock so far. all i've been using is valvoline 5w-30, i'll prolly switch to 10w-30 during the hot @ss texas summer. :fume:
