GM Borla or Borla Touring - flapper worth it?

Recommended Posts

I think I'm zeroing in on the GM Borla or Borla Touring. My understanding is they are basically the same except the GM version costs more but has the flapper for V4.

So is the flapper worth the extra cost? I have the range AFM to turn off v4 but if gas goes way back up I want the option to use v4 without it sounding terrible.

Thoughts from Borla touring or GM borla owners?

Disabling four cylinder really has negligible impact on fuel economy. Save the money, and grab the Borla version. However, the touring has a very minor sound difference over stock. A close friend purchased the touring and was astonished at how similar it was to the stock truck. It seems like a large investment for a slight tonal difference. But, everyone has their wants and needs!

I was originally going to go for the GM Borla system as well. After researching it, I also read that it was very similar to stock. Decided to go with the S-type from Borla (non-GM system). Love the sound, don't notice any drone, and couldn't be happier. There is a louder system, the ATAK, but I think for what you're after the S-type will be good.

I've watched those videos a hundred times already. :) I already tried two exhaust systems and didn't like them so I'm a little gun shy as you might expect. I want something that sounds good when you stomp on it but disappears when cruising. I am also installing gm cold air intake so I'm nervous the Cai exhaust combo could get too noisy

I also put a CAI on my truck, but went with the AFE, not GM. I noticed the two together sound awesome, especially when stomping on it. Maybe take a truck on a test drive from the dealership that has a GM system already on it to see if you like it? I know what you mean about being "gun shy" - It took me quite a while to figure out which system I liked the best.

If I the Cai and borla s combo sounds so great then how come you haven't posted a video for us all to enjoy?

X2 on the Borla S-Type. I can send you a startup sound clip if I can remember in the morning.

LOL because my iPhone would probably do a crappy job compared to the video's Borla puts out :D When I got my Borla on, I had zero intentions of putting in a CAI. I'd say the video I posted above with the S-Type setup is an accurate snapshot of it. The CAI enhancement I notice mostly on the highway when I punch it; not a whole lot in regular city driving.

Funny enough I just came across a members clip of a Borla S-Type and AFE CAI. It's a 6.2 (versus my 5.3) but you get the gist of it...

Thanks. Yeah that sounds a little loud for what I'm looking for.

I've talked to two borla techs. One in California, and the other in Tennessee. The one in Cali said the GM borla is no louder than stock, but had a much deeper tone to that sound. The guy in Tennessee said it is louder as it is the same muffler as the touring. I couldn't make up my mind so I spent $42, and deleted my muffler.

The only one with the flapper is the Borla system straight from GM
