Maintenance Schedule and Warranty Impacts

Hi all. Just wanted to check in with others on this to see if they have ran into any issues. A buddy of mine, who does not own a GM, took his Hyundai in under warranty for a spark plug that literally bursted and damaged his engine. The spark plug was past due to be replaced, according to the maintenance schedule, by less than 2k mi. The dealership said they would not warranty the repairs to the engine due to the spark plug not being replaced in time. With some back and forth with Hyundai and a few weeks later, they ultimately covered it.

Question: seeing as most car companies follow similar policies and procedures with warranties, has anyone come across this with GM?

I'm up to date on all my maintenance and will stay current. You can pull the owner's manual from your truck or with the myGMC app to see the schedule.

FYI... to anyone who's wonder if they should follow standard maintenance schedule while under warranty. I get that GM wouldn't cover a blown engine if you never changed the oil since day one and ran it until it seized, the spark plug seemed petty.

I don't think any of the scheduled maintenance which requires replacing anything other than motor oil is within the warranty period. Air filter maybe.

Wanna bet? I've replaced more than 1 engine that was wholly the owners fault. Just luck of the draw I guess. Which dealer,manager, how busy,etc.

Wanna bet? I've replaced more than 1 engine that was wholly the owners fault. Just luck of the draw I guess. Which dealer,manager, how busy,etc.

Happy to hear GM is helping customers even when they're not obligated to do so.

Pretty much. Just various fluids, e.g. brake and transfer case for 4WD at 45k. Cabin filter at 36k etc.. Mine is a 14, the warranty on the power train is 5 year 100k. I added a year and did bumper to bumper though. I've had various issues with all my GMs in the past and the extended warranty has proved to be worth it.

Not trying to sound negative but if you have had issues with past GM's where you needed an extended warranty then why continue to buy GM's. I have owned 3 brand new silverados and kept them well past the factory warranty period with no major issues. If I felt I can't get 10 years/150k miles without having major problems then I would be looking elsewhere.

For my wife, I buy Acura/Honda etc. and have owned them to 150-200k mi no issues. Just bought a 2016 MDX for her and will probably keep it 10 years. For me, I like big trucks and tow a boat. I also go to the mountains a lot and need to take a lot of gear (snowboards, mountain bikes, etc.). I also have family who worked as engineers/plant manager for GM so I get a significant discount each time. I've owned 6 GMs and have had transmissions go at 5k miles, 37k miles and 77k miles. That's with all maintenance taken care of on time. I love my truck, wrapped it in a full warranty for 6 yrs 100k mi for $2k. Got it for $14k off sticker new from dealership so the $2k warranty and $8k in aftermarket is ok with me. I will sell it when the new body style comes out and there's still a year left on the warranty and decent mileage 10-15k. Note the GM family discount isn't always great. You have to be patient and wait for year end clearance. Then you see massive discounts.
