Upgrade Preference - Catback or Tuner 2017 Silverado 5.3

New to the forum but have modded cars before not trucks. Assume the same principles apply. Since I know there are limited options for hand held tuners and programmers I was wondering what I should do. Get a tuner that maybe limited or get a catback exhaust and wait for a tuner to come out that has figured out the 2017 electronics.

Ali forgot to ask. Is there any benefit other than appearance to have the dual split side vs dual swept side exit. Any input will help

It's more of a personal preference, I believe the tuner would be less money and will give you more options.

That's debatable, If it's not a true straight pipe exhaust it doesn't really add much of anything other than sound. You would need to avoid cat back if you want real preference.

A tune will by far be the best bang for your buck. The exhausts on these trucks flow well stock so IMO if you are looking for sound then change it out. If your looking for power there's not a bunch of power there to free up unless you plan on headers.

Exhaust you will gain sound and that's really it. The "advertised" horsepower is only picked up at RPM's where the truck doesn't spend most of its time (over 4500RPM).

As far as tuning, custom tune and don't look back.

Better call and double-check they can do the 2017 they've made it a lot harder to get into the ecu's the 2017 8-speed trans only HP tuners can do.

I don't know about the tune thing. I had a friend that talked me into using his hypertech 2.0 part 2000 on my 16 truck and to me the only really useful thing that it did was to limit the AFM not to come on until after you reached a minimum speed. That would seem to be the perfect fix for most people and I would like to do that on this 17 6.2 but ole friend says the hypertech can only be married to 3 vin numbers and if he does my 17 it will be junk for any other trucks that he might buy in the future. Debating on if it is worth 350 bones just to order my own....... As far as the other stuff sure it may have increased the HP a touch but I could not tell it. It did change the trans shift points and you could get a tire chirp on upshift which was pretty cool for a couple of tries but not something I would want to do all the time as that would be abusing my truck. I actually drive very conservatively 99% of the time (yes the grandpa thing) I looked at the range thing but it turns the AFM off completely and I would rather have the AFM work at highway speeds and the Range thing is expensive plus tends to run your battery down if you forget to unplug it. If it was like 40 bucks or something i would do it but at over 150 bones NO THANKS it is way too limited......

I went with hp tuners. I bought the handheld and the software. I also had to send my TCM (trans controller) to them to get it unlocked as the new T87A TCM's are locked up like fort knox.

I am going to have a local shop do the tune but I want to learn the software myself and also be able to flash back to stock on my own.

HPtuners also offers this which I thought was really neat.

I bought the "factory " performance Borla cat back exhaust from GM. It is louder than I thought it would be. Low end torque shot up. Definite improvement for a grand but make sure you want the noise.

That seems like a tremendous amount of work. you have to send them your info every time? And wait for them to send you a tune?
