Abnormal shock rub?

I'm getting a clunk, sounds like ball joint or a bad shock/strut. So I looked around the truck just to see if I could find any visual indicators and found this...my truck only has 12k on it and I have two friends with z71's with higher miles than mine with no similar rubbing issue...just wondering what could cause this much rubbing, the dust cover could really do that?

My 2010 has had the same rub marks/rust for 7 yrs now with no issues. I dont have any clunking sounds just the visual rub. The boot rubs on the shock body really no mechanical isue

Clunk is probably the leaf springs

The dust cover will do that. Mine did the same thing so I cut off the covers, sanded and painted the shocks, and put on accordion boots. I couldn't stand seeing the rusty white shocks from behind the truck.
